While listeners can't give advice, some listeners don't know how to form a connection yet. Listening is a skill and it can be hard to converse with someone who is needing help or wanting someone to talk to without giving them advice so it's important that listeners look at forums, ask other listeners for help or take listener courses to help them learn how to form a connection. I personally find it easy to form a connection when I ask the person questions and ask them how they're feeling or ask them how a certain situation made them feel or what they would like the outcome to be.

What I have noticed as a listener is that many people connect with us because they have something on their mind that they want to vent. So I start by asking the members 'what brings you here today?' Some members reply by saying that they are simply looking for a casual chat. That they don't have any particular problems to talk about. So I ask them about their day and try to form a connection. But yeah, most of the time people have something to say which they don't feel comfortable sharing with anyone else. Online strangers whom you are not going to meet or need not impress sounds good for such sharing.
