Diving: I Don’t Understand Roundabouts
20 & Over / by ConureConnor

...See more This is embarrassing to admit, but I have to admit it to actually learn. I for the life of me just can’t seem to understand roundabouts. I’m in my early 20s, still with just my learner’s permit, and I am only comfortable regularly driving to and from work, the store, and a few other places. I still fear the highway (though not nearly as much as I used to) and I absolutely just feel incapable of understanding what to do at a roundabout. Can someone explain it to me? My mom always tells me that I have to stay in my lane and that I keep leaving it and that I don’t know where I’m going…but I don’t know how to know where each lane even ends up. I don’t know when or where I can ever leave the circle, and I just feel disoriented the second I enter one, like I’m either just stuck going in the circle forever or will inevitably just leave at the wrong place. Please, what am I not getting? I’m so lost- because I don’t even understand what I’m not understanding. What am I supposed to be seeing to understand what to do and where to go? Any advice?

...See more I live in a complete trash heap that’s all my fault, but any time I try to clean it, it looks like nothing was even done at all. I don’t even remember the last time I had a clean room, it’s been at least a year. I just can’t do it.

Medication

...See more What was/is your experience with being prescribed/taking medication? I’ve been in therapy for years, and it feels like it has helped as much as it can at this point. And I genuinely feel too anxious in my day to day life to do many of the things (natural remedies/just good behaviors) that would help me further. I’m trying to get an official diagnosis and try medication, but no matter where I look, the initial evaluations are all way too expensive, my insurance won’t cover any of it since I have a deductible I haven’t fully paid into, and all I read about is how terrible these medications are anyway and that they’re going to just make your life even worse and potentially completely ruin you for good so you never get better. So, what is medication actually like? Is it even worth it to try?

How to cope with anxiety

...See more I struggle with really strong, constant feelings of anxiety, and my therapist recently said that he wanted me to focus on discussing some coping mechanisms to help with it. To prepare for my upcoming session with him, I actually sat down, thought about what I’m realistically capable of when I’m at different levels of my anxiety, and I made a whole list of things I can do! This is what I have so far Level 4: Crisis/Emergency * Get somewhere safe * Call or text a crisis line * Call 911 Level 3: Panic * Smell a peppermint nasal stick * Chew sour gum * Listen to familiar music * Feel the cold from a neck or handheld fan * Feel the heat from a neck heater or hand warmers * Acknowledge any intrusive thought, but do not try to agree or disagree with it, fight it, or force it away- try to adopt “maybe, maybe not” mentality Level 2: Mild * Do a breathing exercise * Use a fidget * Open a window * Light a candle * Drink water or tea * Write something * Play a video game * Watch a TV show or movie (something more mindful than YouTube doomscrolling) * Call or text a friend Level 1: Low to None * Take care of basic hygiene * Maintain a clean space * Be mindful of diet and water intake * Workout * Spend time with friends * Go on a walk * Go out for a drive * Go birding * Read a book What do y’all do to cope with, soothe, or wait-out your anxiety? Or what are some things you’re thinking about trying?

The Different Types of Journaling
Hobby Zone / by ConureConnor

...See more Do you journal? If so, how do you journal? Is it like a diary? Bullet journaling? Songwriting? A commonplace book? Scrapbooking? Photography journaling? Reading journaling? Gratitude journaling? Art journaling? Using a guided journal? Any other ways of journaling? What do you like about it? I’m curious as to how exactly people that journal…journal. I’d personally like to start journaling in some way to give myself something low pressure to do in my free time and to help my anxiety.

The disconnect that comes with being trans

...See more Hey, just wanted to post this to see how others relate to it/to see if anyone has any advice to give with how to cope with it. I’ve been really bothered by the feeling of disconnect I have to feel on a daily basis just because I’m trans and cannot come out to the majority of my family. I go by my actual name that I chose and my actual identity at work, whenever I’m out with my friends, and whenever I’m out and about in public- but as soon as I get home (because it’s just too expensive to move out despite me being in my 20s,) I just have to instantly revert back to who everyone thinks I am- the deadname, the assumed roles I’ll play in my life, just having to nod my head and lie and pretend, make up stories every single day just to fit the narrative that I am who they assume me to be just to keep the peace. I feel so lonely and isolated and disconnected. Like I’m just in the backseat of my own body watching my family interact with a doll as if it’s real. I don’t even really respond automatically to my deadname anymore, it takes genuine effort for me sometimes to remember and recognize that they’re talking to me when they use it. I never actually feel like they’re talking to me- seeing me. Does anyone else feel this way? How do you deal with it? Especially when you have to be around people like this constantly without the option to come out or leave?

Shelf-stable meals?

...See more Hey, a bit more of a practical question, but what are some healthy/somewhat healthy foods and snacks that don’t have to be kept refrigerated, frozen, or reheated to eat? I’m talking like jerky…freeze-dried fruit…bread…stuff like that. There are just times when I can’t really leave my room for a few hours, so I don’t always have access to things like the fridge, freezer, oven, stove, or microwave that are all in the kitchen. I need to be able to store it in my room and eat it as-is at room temperature.
