The Different Types of Journaling
Do you journal? If so, how do you journal? Is it like a diary? Bullet journaling? Songwriting? A commonplace book? Scrapbooking? Photography journaling? Reading journaling? Gratitude journaling? Art journaling? Using a guided journal? Any other ways of journaling? What do you like about it?
I’m curious as to how exactly people that journal…journal. I’d personally like to start journaling in some way to give myself something low pressure to do in my free time and to help my anxiety.
@ConureConnor
I like to do gratitude journalling 🥰
And scrapbooking, keeping tokens of good days out and memories, that allow me to remember things I'd otherwise forget and on difficult days, they really lift my spirits 🩵🤗
I do morning pages. Basically, you write 3 full pages of stream of consciousness thoughts when you first wake up. My head feels a lot more clear when I'm finished. It also calms me more than doomscrolling on my phone.
This is something I'd love to integrate into my routine, but haven't been able to (yet). I'm glad this works for you! It makes sense that it would calm you.
I just do… regular journaling lol. Just like life events and feelings and such :)

Thank you for the tag! This is right up my alley!
I usually write poetry or song write but I've also kept diaries before
@ConureConnor don't try to artificially engineer a system. Or an aesthetic. Just ask yourself what do you want and need. For example, I use a plain, A5 notebook with hard cover as I found that works the best for me because the blank paper let's me do anything I want. But I also bought a 100 things I want to do notebook from Tiger a while ago that I'm now filling (and dutyfully treating the categories as a suggestion lol. For example, I said I don't need a things I want to share section. But i wanna have a things I want to buy one. So I simply crossed the title and wrote the improved one lol)
I also do print photos sometimes (got a mini zinc paper printer for Christmas that lets you stick the photo right on the page, I think my model is called zoemini?) But it's genuinely depending on mood an reasons. I also did habit trackers for a while and daily reflections (like 3 things that made me happy) for a few years but that system doesn't work for me anymore.
So don't try to force a system or make it aesthetic. Just take an empty notebook of your preferred paper type and see what you need. Maybe you will need to do it daily, maybe just ocassionally. Maybe you want to dive deep and write your soul out about everything from trauma to self discovery, or you just wanna note down some fun memorable moments of the day or use it to challenge yourself or document a specific type of things. Each of these will lead you to a different format preference, so pick something that you think matches you the best (for example you can even have a dated daily callendar that you will journal into if you like to note down short things.) Or you want this to be a challenge so you take a fun guided one. The sky is the limit, and there is no right or wrong way to journal. Unless you want to attach a McDonald's fry to the page. Definitely don't do that 😂
The last part tho XD
I do journal!
I wrote about what is happening in the present moment, what I’m thinking about, sometimes what I’m feeling, prayers to God, etc. If something stands out to me from therapy, I write it in my journal. If I remember a happy moment with someone I don’t have anymore, I write it in my journal. I wrote about the things I did, the things I ate, the things I bought. I write about theories I have in my head to explain the world and my life.
I also use many different guided journals, and it is a totally different thing to me than journaling in my lined journal. I have a wide variety of guided journals.
I also write lyrics for potential songs, but I do this in a separate notebook.
I kept a gratitude journal every day for five years. Now I occasionally do one page of What’s Good About Today? But not every day.
There’s also poetry of course, and I do that on occasion when it seems to fit my purposes or I am just feeling creative.
What do I like about journaling?
To be honest, I like the sensory feeling of the pencil or pen on the paper LOL. I like seeing that what I am doing is making a visible difference on the page. I like that it doesn’t ever feel like it is a waste of time. It always feels good.
Oh, I also copy our impactful texts or things I receive.
I would highly recommend journaling to absolutely everyone! It is a screen free activity and I believe very healthy!
Best wishes to you on this endeavor!
:)
@ConureConnor I journal on an app, it's easily accessible, safe and secure for me 💖🥰
It's usually poetry for me. I definitely have the emotion of a lot of eras in writing. I like it being free form, and not having to be specific, allowing it to feel less mundane and more interesting
I've been trying to make myself journaling for a while... Whatever comes to my mind. I vowed to write at least once every week... It worked... for a while.. then I started to write less... and less... and just... stopped writing altogether. I know it helps, but I just can't motivate myself to write anything. My last attempt was this book I found on temu. "My Daily Self Care Journal"
Each day, I'm supposed to write into it twice. Once in the morning, stuff like "What are you looking forward today?" or "Write down 3 things you're grateful for." or "What would make today great?"
And once in the evening, stuff like "Write down 2 good things that happened today" or "What am I proud of today?" and it has a scale from 1-10, rating my day, and a 5 option mood tracker, too....
I have this book for months. Only started 3 days ago... Already skipped yesterday evening, and this morning...
