That's a tough but also very valuable lesson.
One thing my step-dad used to say frequently was "You can do something right a hundred times, but do it wrong just once and that's all anyone will remember." ...yeah, guess who still has a crippling fear of failure?

I'm sorry that what your step-father said still impacts your life. Fear of failure can stop you from doing many things you might find pleasure in and also might get good at. I hope coming here will help to lessen this fear, hugs.

The Golden Rule (treat others how you want to be treated) is a good rule to live by...my grandmother went one step further... treat others BETTER than you think you want to be treated!

The thing I was told most often was to "have more faith, pray more, and have an eternal perspective." I hated it because it always made me feel like my mental health issues were because I was selfish or not faithful enough. I have prayed my whole life and I love prayer and meditation, but I don't know, the advice has always grated me because it felt like my mental health issues were a result of my failings.
@emotionalPond2459 This totally resonates with me! I experienced similar where I felt like the issues I had was because I didn't have enough faith or I didn't pray enough. I essentially was failing. I'm sorry you had this experience. Know you are not alone in this!

i grew up in a home filled with hate and I began a journey for peace and discovered the world is how you view it. My family was stuck in a pattern of poor decisions and bad behavior but I wanted better. I envisioned a world where everyone got along and started thinking in those terms. I started behaving in ways that brought peace but that also meant letting go of things that were toxic. My family was definitely not in control of how they live their lives but the beautiful thing is, we do have control. We can change the course of our journey through our thoughts.
