How do you try to stop yourself when you over think?

Here is an article to help understand when we over think things

Overthinking, overanalyzing, weighing too many factors, asking others’ opinions, and searching all angles—it’s easy to be indecisive when there is so much to take into consideration. Especially when we’re trying to make decisions about our health and wellness. But this seeking of too much input is exactly how indecisiveness actually becomes part of our decision-making process! We are likely to get caught in “analysis paralysis” and not move forward. When it comes to deciding on treatments and plans for managing bipolar, we cannot sit in a state of indecision. To address it, we have to focus on limiting the scope to cultivate clarity and confidence in our decision-making strategies.

Confident Decision-Making with Bipolar

One thing that helped to strategize my decision-making process was to cut out outside opinions. I made an effort to make decisions on my own and stop being wishy-washy, or, as I used to say, “easygoing” or “not caring.” In time, I recognized how my indecisiveness was not serving me. Sometimes people would get frustrated with me for not having an opinion, making a decision, or choosing a position. I picked up on my need to assert myself and my preferences, so I made a conscious effort to build this skill. It has made operating with the challenges of mental illness easier.

Positivity Plays a Part in Self-Confidence

It is true, we cannot always please everyone; we cannot put our needs aside for others; and we do need to be considerate of how our decisions affect others. I have been grateful for my shift in being positive, because it can help with being decisive, causing decision-making to be easier. How so? By always choosing to decide on a positive outcome. If it is a negative outcome, it’s the wrong decision. If the choice creates a win-win outcome, in my opinion, it is the right decision. Every time. No need to overthink, overanalyze, ponder.

I have found that choosing positivity increases confidence in our decision-making skills, which goes a big way toward increasing self-confidence. And this is just by aligning with what has become a sort of formula for me. Quite simple, if you think about it: If it makes me or other people happy, it is a yes; and if it makes me or anyone else unhappy, no.

Decisiveness & Self-Worth

I did notice that addressing my decisiveness was connected to gaining comfort in maintaining my boundaries and saying no when I wanted to say so. This was hard for me because of my people-pleasing tendencies, having an inferiority complex, and being attached to outside validation. But what I found was that by pushing this growth, it helped me to overcome obstacles.

I also found that I had to tackle some of my issues about feeling unworthy. This is because, at times, saying yes was hard for me, too. For me, saying yes became about my “deservability” and my self-worth—who knew? The easier it became for me to say no, aligning with my boundaries, and to say yes to worthiness and happiness, the easier my decision-making became, too. How does that work out? Because I believe our decisions should always serve our highest good. No indecisiveness there.

It’s All about Growth

Like any change, it takes commitment, perseverance, time, and patience. Growth is a trial-and-error process. It is not linear, where everything goes right and you step into effective decision-making skills. We are creating new strategies, so I always recommend that we do not stop until we are done. Until we have accomplished transforming indecisive tendencies into firm, confident decisions.

Lastly, it is important that decisions serve our highest good. People are not always going to like our actions or decisions, but if we do like them and they align with our positive practices, then we should feel good about them. And that’s also an indication that we have made the right decision—when we feel good about ourselves for making them. Then, as we start to feel good about ourselves and our decisions, this helps us to trust ourselves, too. It’s great how things come together through the process of growth. Growth is the way, in my opinion, of making everything right.
