Asian Hate Crimes
So this shooting doesn't feel shocking, but the police insisting it isn't a hate crime is bringing back all the stress from last year. Being told by my son's Principal that getting shoved and kicked in the halls and called "Carona" wasn't racist because most of the kids doing the beating were black was the low point. The anti-racist policies didn't apply to Asian students. I worry for my son going back to in person school this year. He's barely over a hundred pounds... I feel so impotent.
@BecomeSea, so sorry to hear about how your son was treated in school. I can understand how helpless you feel. Have you tried talking to the principal or your son's teachers. Most schools have their own student counsellors. It might help your son to unload, understand and empower if he talks a counsellor about these incidents.
Yes they were the ones who informed me that it wasn't racism. And that my son just needed to keep his head down. And that it wasn't really an insult to call him Corona. My son is not as stressed about it as I am. He sees it as temporary annoyance and frustration... I worried for his safety
@BecomeSea
First all of this mess is on the hands of the previous administration, along with many current politicians who are spewing endless hate and lies to pander to their population who have a bias that can't be corrected, so why not just keep further pushing the bigotry? After all it's not what's good for the country that matters, it's what'll get them elected and in political power that matters. So the hateful narrative of "them" vs us continues. There was no excuse to pin this pandemic on a race of people. That set the message from the top and it wasn't a fair one.
Second, I can't stand that a certain group of people who claim that their lives matter, don't actually care about other groups of people's lives. I supported their movement until I saw 90 year old Asian folk being pushed flat into the pavement and 80 something year old grandmas getting punched by them. You'd think that they, of all people, would understand what it is like to be picked on based on their skin color, but they do the exact same thing that they condemn so much! Hypocrisy much! And administrators like principals are afraid of getting "canceled" so of course they'll tell you it's not racially motivated. What a crying shame. Sure, there has been a lot of white-on-black inequality, but there's white&black&middle eastern & hispanic inequality/violence/bullying on Asian people - and most of the time, it's *crickets*. And the sad thing is, many Asian people just suck it up and move on. My husband who is white, says that's what makes my people resilient... but come on. Why do we have to shoulder all of this trauma and be the resilient ones? Getting into college is harder b/c they have a higher standard for Asians, finding a job is harder bc we're not considered a minority and therefore don't have any affirmative action/ "diversity" programs, being accepted into society is harder bc like i mentioned above, every race bullies on us and we really don't do anything to fight back. But apparently we Asian Americans have "priviledge" because we're over-represented in the fields of engineering, medicine, law, etc. Yeah, that's because we work our asses off, thank you very much! But apparently that's because we're priviledged. I'm sorry your son is going through this. As a multi-generation Asian American, I know exactly how it feels. I don't have kids yet but am also concerned about what my mixed race kid will face once they are school age. I can only hope they look more White than Asian. That's the sad truth.
I don't think we should judge an entire movement based on the horrible behavior's of some individuals. A lot of my son's black friends would NEVER be racist against Asians and many of them are now speaking up now that there is more visibility. It's all a symptom of white colonialist attitudes (even if white people are'nt the ones doing the damage)and none if it is acceptable. As for school next year I actually had my husband write an email to the super intendant yesterday in hopes of clarifying that the anti racist policies apply to Asians before school starts. Actually, I wrote the letter but, as I have learned in the past, my attorney husband gets better results than I do with his name and title at the bottom of things.🧐 I have a half Asian kids with brown hair and green eyes and it makes no difference. However, that might be because I live in an area with very few Asians. He is however thankfully very tan ( because I literally burn on cloudy days). I'm sorry things are crappier than usual for you. It isn't OK. You deserve better.
@BecomeSea
*high fives* and well done my friend!
I'm glad you considered contacting the superintendant and going above the head of the principle at your sons school that clearly appears to be "tone deaf". I commend you for using your "resources" and of course, one of them is your husband with a big ole' lawyer title! hahhha, I get to laugh right now. Okay.......I'm going to laugh again! So they won't listen to you but betcha' betcha they will listen to your man! I still get to laugh one more time at the people that have treated your son this way and then you by ignoring you. hahhhaa, the person that they orginally ignored (you) is well spoken and well written, so it is just the same message as you had orginally shared, you again forming this letter and with the same thought process, but yet now with the signature of a male that has a lofty title.......and might I add, one that should make anyone take pause at their past behavior as well as future! Well played Sea, well played! It's called "use what you got". Bows in front of greatness!
@lavenderPomegranate6687
I value your thougts and opinions and I think you made some very good points in your post! I'm so sorry that this is something you are having to experience!
@BecomeSea
Hi Sea and thank you for your post!
I must say, what you are seeing going on in the world, is in fact real. Gosh, I own a television set. I see Asian hate crimes have doubled in the last year. It breaks my heart. I think these things are being done by ignorant and violent people that are blaming the covid crisis on any and every person of Asian descent that they see.
One of my very good friends is Vietnamese and my sons best friend is Korean. Even if that were not the case, again, I own a television set and what you are experiencing is real. I'm saying this to you because I don't want you to feel alone, not believed and misunderstood. I know, it's a terrible feeling if any one of us feels that way.
I wonder if ignorant people in America learned nothing from the Japenese internment camps? Every person that even slightly looked to be of Japanese decent others saw as a threat. These people were American citizens.
Even more recent, after 911 anyone with dark skin, seemed to be of Indian descent, Muslim, anything, were treated poorly and it still happens today. Just because you are Muslim does not mean that you are here to attack the United States. My understanding is that even the word Muslim when translated means "peace". Many people that are Muslims are American citizens and have to experience social injustice.
Just like Americans, people think different things and have different behaviors and white people can be bad people too. Racism and blanket statements are horrible.
I'm so sorry that you and your son are experiencing this. I'm wondering if you have considered escalating all of this to the Superintendant that would be over all of the schools where you live, going over the head of the principle if you are not getting the proprer protection for your child? I think you are amazing for being a loving parent that is rightfully concerned for your child. I send you big *hugs*
my friend!
Thanks you for your supportive words. Compared to last march there is a lot more awareness that is happening. I am hoping that things improve because of it.
@BecomeSea
I agree! I think more awareness to the issue is coming forward and people are becoming tired and very upset about the social injustice and violence towards those in the Asian community. Hey, as for me, I would be what is considered to be "lilly white". I'm so white I have heard jokes before, the best one ever was that I look so white, if I stand in the sun it's like an x-ray machine. For me, I think it's funny personally and my son takes after me so he looks pretty darn white too (he didn't think this stuff was funny always, but he has grown to kind of laugh it off). I'm of Irish descent. Oh well. But hey, my "people" came over here to the U.S. at one time too and this place is the melting pot.
What is happening to you and your son is not funny, not funny at all.
I am, in fact, that exact shade if Irish white🤣 My husband is Taiwanese. My son is half Asian. It means that on some level I can't truly emphasize, which is frustrating. It has bever been an issue until this year.
@BecomeSea
I really must say, I think you are doing a wonderful job of showing compassion and empathizing with what is going on! I think you are truly empathizing. You are white and your son is 1/2 Tawainese. Children are an extension of ourselves and I can tell that you love him dearly and are concerned for him, even though this is something that you may not have had to experience in your personal life (at least potentially race driven/hate crimes). I commend you. You love your child. Therefor, this has upset you for the love of your baby to seek support on 7 cups!
