50+ Weekend Check-In August 12-14, 2022
Hello everyone, nice to see you in the forum 😊
Something I always was curious about to find out as a child was how things work, like how does a clock work, what makes the fingers turn. It was exiting to me to find out what it was. When things break down the household I love to take them apart and try to repair them or if that is not possible just to see how they are made. I still can get very exited about it especially when I finally do understand how it works (which can take a while with some things 😃)
What is something that you always found exciting in life either as a child or later in life?

When I was a kid, there was one thing that always got me excited, as well as my cousins who were there too at the time. When we stayed at grandma & grandpa's farm, our youngest aunt, who still lived at home would from time to time holler out, "Who wants to go to the tunnel?!!" What ever kids were there would shout back without fail, "Me! Me! Me!"
What was the tunnel? Well, today most old railroad tracks are now bike paths, as is the railroad this particular tunnel is on. The trek to this tunnel back then was so much fun. First we crossed the country road in front of the house, crawl over a barbed wire fence and then walk through a field, sometimes not missing a fresh cow pie or two. Then over another fence and we'd walk through the woods. Some of it is kind of hazy now but there was one spot about half way there, where there was a hole in the ground. This was where, years ago the tunnel builders made access to part of the tunnel. They never did fill in the hole all the way. We could find snow in there in the middle of summer sometimes. Then there was another woods that had a very traveled cattle path that led to an aqueduct of sorts. At the start, you had to pick whether you wanted to walk in the aqueduct or, walk dangerously on the top of the wall. We usually took the wall. It was about a foot and half wide, so there was plenty of space to walk on. But, a ways down, all the ground had shredded away. The side that led to the railroad tracks about a hundred feet down.
The wall path gradually met the end of the aqueduct and evened out with the tracks. We went to the tracks and followed them to the tunnel. I'm sure there's pictures of it online somewhere. I don't have any of my old ones anymore. But maybe I can find one and I'll post it as a comment to this post. I walked through the tunnel once before the place was designated a bike path. Horror of horrors, we met a car half way through it. We actually had to hug those slimy buggy walls in the dark. It was okay. The car was going slow and all went okay. Nothing like what you think is a near death for real experience on Earth to make you remember something. Anyway, sometimes when I'm stressed, I try to go back there in my mind.
So that's one of the rare happy memories from my childhood that was genuinely happy, and yeah, exciting.
My child hood was extremely limited of social events. So when I went to kindergarten I saw an easel for the first time. Paints were right at the edge of it and the white paper stared at me with endless opportunity. I fell in love with painting. So much that even as an adult I still paint. I never know what I am going to paint because I am entirely painting in the moment without any direction or expectation.
Another experience I still recall from child hood is spending hours in my aunt's swimming pool when we visited her. I would spend hours in the pool even though I couldn't swim. As an adult, I lost 106 lbs, swimming at the gym. I still love water!!! I am an Aquarius so I believe that water is my soulmate.
@glowofthelight
I can only imagine how exiting it was for your going into kindergarten and meet other kids. Nice that you still follow that passion of painting and also for water! 106 lbs - wow that's truly a lot! Have you been on a special diet programme?
Hi @amiablePeace77, nope. Like Forest ran.... I swam. I became "normal" in the pool, with RA basic movement is a challenge on land. So, I realized that in a pool I could swim anyway I wanted and that my RA pain somehow disappeared. I shed off pounds and became a different person.

Hi, Peace,
the water going over the edge of the Niagara Falls. You can walk on fortified sidewalks pretty close to the edge. You can see the volume of water, the speed, the power, and be so close to danger, yet be safe.
Something exciting that I experienced as an adult was the total eclipse we traveled West to experience in 2017. It was wonderful! We rented a spot in a pasture and camped out along with many others outside a small town in Idaho. The weather was perfect. The darkness that fell over us was profound during the eclipse. I'll never forget this experience.

When I was a child, I found traveling very exciting. I loved going places and I loved flying. It's so muh fun when the plane takes off. The view from the plane is great, too, if the sky is clear and you can see the ground.
I can't afford to travel now (it's been 31 years since I flew), but maybe someday I will go somewhere.

Swimming in the summertime. What a joy that was. Now when I get the urge to swim I take a shower ! lol

Hi Ami:
I was always curious with how things worked too. Guess that served as a good foundation for me to become a scientist. I also still enjoy fixing things when they break.
