Early Signs of Dementia

Dementia: early signs of memory loss, confusion with the day or time, difficulty with certain tasks, or

projects, speaking clearly, and personality changes.

Dementia varies from person to person. Even though they vary, the signs of dementia can be the same. Some early signs of dementia are also trouble remembering distances and locations, misplacing things, and asking a question over and over in a 5-minute span.

Your family and friends may see the change before you notice them. This is part of getting older and should be considered seeing a family doctor for help. Everyone at any age forgets things, some more than others, but that is a part of living your life. But if the symptoms get worse, then it becomes a problem. Someone with dementia can go for a walk and suddenly forget where they were going and how to get home safely.

It is not always easy to see the signs for someone or even yourself; some signs of dementia will come out more like trying to say a sentence. You are trying to talk, but the words are not coming out properly for others to understand. Your speech may be slurred. Changes to our brains make it hard to notice.

Caring for our loved ones and ourselves can bring joy and also be a challenge as we grow older. Dementia is not a disease; it is a term for decline in our cognitive function, meaning it interferes with our daily lifestyle we live. It is completely normal for aging adults to begin to decline a bit in their health.

Watching someone who is going through this, even if it is yourself, is heartbreaking.
