Doctors orders

My doctor thinks I need a support group since I don't have one in real life.

I am not sure why or what someone that is not trained in mental health can do for someone like me.

I suffer from Persistent Depressive Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety, Performance Anxiety, Anhedonia and I am a sober alcoholic. My doctor prescribes me plenty of pills but they do little for me.

I was once a successful person that was looked up to. Now I am a shell of my former self with nothing to look forward to except obligation.

Thanks for pointing this out but the timing for events here seem to be geared to people that have no obligations like jobs.

Hello Not so good today. This is just my opinion.(Harmful advice removed) Can you start exercising? Look for a a Church family. My advice is to pray. God listens and will help you through. HE is the great physician. I know medicines can help when needed. You have tried those and they aren’t working for you. Keep getting up in the mornings and get dressed for the day. Remember you are a beautiful person who God created.

i have been done and down and HE did help me more than once. HE helped me today actually. I could not make it without reading my scriptures and praying. That is my opinion and it does work for me.

@bestEast2648 Hey thank you for offering support to your peer! I edited your post. Let's remember not to give advice about medicines prescribed by professionals. We can leave that to the doctors!

Why are people allowed to push their religion on others? I feel like that is just as harmful as the advice you removed.

I find it very triggering having someone tell me I need a church family and god is the only physician who can help because it's discriminatory and wrong.

Hi there! I'm being let down by the system right now aswell. It sucks having the feelling of "if the pros can't help me, who can?"

The only thing I found helped, was the "I can do anything" mindset. Not in the sense of pushing myself to do things, but in the sense of not being restricted. We're on a floating rock in the middle of galaxies, space and stars, does the grades I, one of billions of people, get really matter in the grand scheme of things- no.

This world is for us to live in, and we can decide how to do it. I don't know your age, living- or financial situation, but even at my lowest, the thought of seing things from the biggest possible perspective, has really helped. You could live amongst the animals in the middle of the woods, and the universe around us wouldn't care. Not to say that you should do that, but just some food for thought.

I hope I could help! If the professionals can't help us, we'll have to do it ourselves. In that way we're better at their profession than they are 😅 Have a wonderful day! - 15 year old stranger (PS: Working out through the anger and sadness works wonders!) (If you're not disabled that is 😄)

I very much recommend the Sharing Circle (group chat). It is a safe, non jugdemental space, to share and be heard.

In terms of what a support group can do for you, it truly depends on what your needs are, and how well that group resonates with you.

One thing I can point out as a positive, is to have someone embrace you, just for the sake of showing compassion. In support groups, there is no arrangment of payment. Everything you recive, is given freely. I find this experience very different from seing a therapist.

Mental health is no joke, and there is so many potential hinders for us to navigate. For what it's worth, I do recommend sharing your experiences in a safe space - like the sharing circle. You can find it in the group chats. Please feel free to have a look.

@Notsogoodtoday The way sharing circle works is that everyone takes turn sharing, it is usually led by a listener or a member. The queue opens up, and you join it by sending a * into the chat. Everyone gets seven or five minutes to share.

@Notsogoodtoday Hi. I have had lots of depressed times, and I went to therapists who suggested pills more than once. One actually refused to see me after the first session if I didn’t take anti-depressants. One of the last times I was severely depressed, I seriously considered taking anti-depressants, but I’m the kind of person who reads the medication guide, and I tried to discuss the risks with my doctors. They acted like they were not even remotely aware of what THEY should be having me checked for before prescribing. So I went looking for a therapist who wouldn’t try to push me on using drugs. Ironically, I found a psychiatrist who was looking for how to treat depression without drugs. So, if the drugs are not working for you you might want to check out Dr. David Burns, “Feeling Good” (he has a newer edition, “Feeling Great” and unfortunately the formatting was a turn off, so I’d suggest the original). It is available in print, electronic and audio formats. Below is a link to a TED talk Dr. Burns gave, describing how he shifted from prescribing anti depressants to CBT. He doesn’t say never to anti depressants, but he also saw patients recover without them. And it is psychology that makes sense, not a bunch of lying on a couch working through silly Freudian bla bla bla or trying to figure out what a dream or fricken ink blot means. https://youtu.be/H1T5uMeYv9Q

This sounds like where I was a bit ago regarding former self. I decided since my meds weren't working I needed to look beyond western medicine. I threw a lot of things at a wall and am pretty much out of the worst part. Have you heard of quantum healing? Heard of Shaan Kaasam? These are some of the programs I did. I so want to tell you that there IS a way out. I didn't believe it. I really thought, oh my God-- this is who i am now. This was the most depressing thought of all! Still struggling with my usual self esteem, anger, grief issues. But I'm out of the house- cooking-- driving-- things I wasn't doing. I'm sending you patience with self, something I still have trouble with.
