Alertness

Good Monday community, I wish you a lovely week laugh.

Todays post is about aging and alertness cheeky

Common memory changes that are associated with normal aging include:

Difficulty learning something new:Committing new information to memory can take longer.

Task Switching: Slowed processing can make processing and planning parallel tasks more difficult.

Recalling names and numbers: Strategic memory that helps memory of names and numbers begins to decline at age 20.

Remembering appointments: Without cues to recall the information, appointments can be put safely in storage and then not accessed unless the memory is jogged.

Are there some things you experience as well and how are you coping with them?

Did you add something to your daily routine in the last months which you found to be helpful to become more alert?

I started up Bollywood dance again and feel it helps my alertness, I have to focus on the movements because a lot of them are new.

What about you?smiley

@amiablePeace77 way to go doing bollywood dance! I did a little bit when I took some Zumba classes.

I find reminders are great so I definitely like a calendar. Remembering names is more difficult because I see lots of people in exercise class and never know if I will see them again. But I try to make associations that make sense and help me or at least make an effort to match their face with a name.

Exercise helps my brain function so many mornings I have exercise classes.

I started an exercise class, sponsored by the college I work for. It seems to be helping in a number of ways.

This year I was attempting to play one of those match images card games for kids and I was terrible. Part of it was that the images were new to me, but part was age. So far that is the biggest difference Ive seen other than forgetting a name. However, Ive never been good at names wink. So far I just continue to learn new things in tech/code, and I may go after a Masters. Ive lost one parent to dementia and will eventually lose the other to a similar form. Have already done DNA testing, which actually was a relief. Im after a quality life more than a long one and feel good about that.

@Zengrl

Hi Zen, sorry to hear that you lost one of your loved ones to dementia and might loose another one. This must be hard for you and I can understand that you took the test which I am glad gave you relief.

Wow, tech/code, sounds really difficult and you got a masters!

I also prefer quality of life to quantity/length

i am on another track than most folks who are continuing on a spectrum of aging; i am still recovering from substantial brain damage sustained 28 yrs ago. so i find that my memory is actually still improving~! not on it's own, of course, i have a dedicated rehabilitation regimine which i designed myself, for myself. a mainstay in this newest rehab program is the use of Hidden Object games on the computer. these reward me for remembering where i saw something or recognizing it from memory. i also use the Match Three game, Bejewelled 3, to help me hold more information at a time. i am quite pleased with these, as the recommended games for 'seniors' were too hard for me.

Some days I'm on it other days I'm really not. Not much to support the rough days unfortunately.

I'm finding I run into situations more often where I can't remember names, I'm not sure how much of this is just my memory and how much of it is situational - I'm more likely to see people multiple times with large breaks inbetween which is different than something like work or school or even a weekly activity where at minimum you see someone once a week, so the reminders come every week and then it 'locks in' instead of a month apart where it never sticks.

I like facebook, it gives the opportunity to see someone's name with their face in addition to hearing it, plus it's possible to check out people if part of a group or something before heading to an event. Unfortunately I don't have access to all the people where I need their names like this!

@AffyAvo that sounds rough. I work hard to remember names but if I do not use name every week it is on the dust bin lol.

Having regular health meals helps my memory and alertness

@AffyAvo

Hi Affy, I believe it's normal not to remember names or not easily when not seeing people on a constant basis. I try to make sure that I get enough sleep to stay.

Social media offers surely some interesting aspects.
