Researchers have shown that we think more than 50,000 thoughts per day, of which more than half are negative and more than 90% are just repeats from the day before.

Why do you think is introspection so important?

90% of the thoughts are repeated. Hah!
In my case, that could be 99.8% 😜

Why do you think is introspection so important?

Because those repeated thoughts are trying to tell me something. I believe if something is bugging me, it won't be until I get at the underlying cause that I will resolve it. So I need some introspection to look at what is going on.

For example, I might be annoyed at an incident at work. This might bug me because I'm perhaps uncomfortable with the way I got defensive at the person who annoyed me. I could get stuck at justifying why I am annoyed at them. Or I could realise that I got defensive because I hold a deep seated believe that I am an inconvenience to others. I could look at where that belief came from and thus decide if it is true. Or if I want to reject it.

Equally introspection can allow me to verify that I wasn't the root cause and that I can feel positive about my actions and change nothing.

Introspection allows me to find the root cause of a situation and to change it if I would like it to be different.

Great thoughts! If you don’t make the time and effort to refocus your mind on the root causes through introspection, you won’t give yourself the opportunity to grow and develop.

Fascinating! As a chronic overthinker being someone with OCD, I am always worried about my thoughts. Intrusive thoughts and more make it hard. So one thing I'm always monitoring is are my thoughts positive or negative and the like. I also know humans are predisposed to remember more, better, and remember more vividly, negative events in order to help survive. So the fact that we have more negative thoughts would make sense and only reinforces why I struggle lol.

I'm also concerned with not repeating the same thoughts day to day re habit loops and OCD so the repeat thoughts fact is interesting too. One thing that helps with this is reading many books so that there's always new thoughts in my head. Probably also why I love literature/philosphy/considering obscure topics so much. This is making me realize how important books and mindfullness practices are for repeat and negative thoughts alike. Lovely!

Keeping the brain busy with new thoughts which you can actually choose by what you read sounds like a good idea to me. Nice that it helps you with OCD. Thank you for sharing this point!
