There is nothing wrong with television per se, but there is something wrong with the television being on all the time. The problem is that noise impedes you from truly relaxing. Living in a consistently noisy environment will cause you to experience extremely high levels of harmful stress hormones.

Do you believe that we as societies have too high noise levels on a constant basis and what impacts on our well-being do you notice?

Hiya, Peace,

Do you believe that we as societies have too high noise levels on a constant basis and what impacts on our well-being do you notice?

I think a large part of the level of noise depends on where we live. And it might also depend on what goes on inside the home, tv constantly on for example. I just moved to a place where there are unfortunately a regular number of people who drive into the parking lot with their car stereos on so loud that I can feel the base in my body. My stress level goes straight up, and it actually makes me mad if they leave it on even for just a minute. It seems like an eternity.

That sounds very stressful purple and I could imagine that going through this on a constant basis your nervous system becomes more sensitive and you might react faster with feelings of discomfort. Is this a free parking lot or a paid one? If paid, you might be able to talk to the owner to put a sign up saying to reduce music volume or similar.

@amiablePeace77

It's the parking lot for the apartment community. So many seem to do it, that I think it would be a futile exercise.

@purpleTree4652 There are certain frequencies that, if one puts out some kind of steady signal, can jam electronic devices such as computers...& car stereos. I dunno exactly what frequency one must broadcast on but in this Golden Age of DIY (thanks to the Net), it shouldn't be too difficult to find schematics to build such a device... Food for thought.

Do you believe that we as societies have too high noise levels on a constant basis and what impacts on our well-being do you notice?

Definitely there are many things that are too loud. When my neighbors throw parties, I can hear their music a block away. There is no need for such volume. They have children in their homes, too. Those noise levels damage one's hearing permanently. Those kids will be half-deaf by the time they're grown up, and then they will have their music blasting loud, too.

People drive through my neighborhood with noise blasting from their cars. I don't want to hear what they're listening to. They don't need it so loud.

One of the main reasons I don't go to movies anymore is that they have the sound on so loud. For years, I've worn earplugs in the theater. I can hear the movie just fine with the earplugs in my ears. Now, though, it's so loud that the earplugs aren't enough. I stay home. Of course, the movies they make now are garbage, too.

@WharfRat

I fully agree with you WharfRat especially about children. It will impact their hearing, their ability to focus and so much more and when they become adults they will most probably turn up the volume even more. Some countries have noise level limits in residential areas though which is a good thing provided they are respected of course.

@amiablePeace77 I agree completely. The noise, like everything, is being produced in excess. People are so used to loud noises in their ears that they can't even tell when they are yelling themselves.
They are oblivious to the impact their noise makes on others.
People keep talking while the tv is on at a loud volume.
People honk even when they can see there is no way the traffic can move ahead.

The horns, the chatter, the loud music, noise of the machines, etc. It all adds up and affects our stress levels. The default stress level is simply much higher in cities than it should be, mainly due to the noise pollution.

Yes. The hum & other noises of the apartment refrigerator is the lowest level of noise I can hope for.

Others here have listed worse examples; no need to rehash them.

One long-term effect of my main condition is in some cases it can result in deafness. Most people think of that as a tragedy, but considering the auditory hellscapes that civilization generates...maybe going deaf isn't such a bad thing....

I believe the thought not wanting to hear anything at all can easily come up when we're surrounded by so much noise but then again their are also wonderful noises to listen to like the chirping of the birds in the morning, a relaxing music video or just the voice of a loved one.

Spreading more mindfulness might be the solution to many problems we have in this world.

"spreading mindfulness" would be the solution to many of our problems in this world if all those problems were so simple...& if everyone were that considerate. Unfortunately, neither is true.

I agree, it is not simple and when one watches the news it even can appear impossible but I still believe that we all can find better ways to deal with challenges, to deal with each other by learning to be more mindful - Hope.

I love to listen to the birds in the morning while I have my coffee, not so much though, in the early morning while I am still trying to sleep!!! 😳 I realize this post is about noise, which is bothersome enough by itself, but light pollution bothers me as much or more. Can hardly see the stars anymore, haven't seen the Milky Way galaxy since I was a kid, except on a couple trips to very rural areas. It makes me sad. Last night I fell because I was blinded by my neighbors new outdoor lights coming through the sidelight of my front door. Those new LEDs are so very bright!

Oh no, I hope you did not get hurt! Light pollution is definitively another issue. I prefer the "warm light" led bulbs but you have a good point - I believe there are simply too many lights everywhere and often flashing too which can impact our well being.

Listening to the birds in the morning whilst enjoying a cup of coffee sounds awesome!

Re "There is nothing wrong with television per se..." - I humbly beg to differ.

Rather than go on a rant here, I'll just leave some quotations:

"Television is an invention that permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you wouldn't have in your home."

- David Frost

"I'm delighted with it because it used to be that films were the lowest form of art. Now we have something to look down on."

- Billy Wilder

"The one function that TV news performs very well is that when there is no news, we give it to you with the same emphasis as if there were."

- David Brinkley

"Television turned out to be exactly as bad as the most irritating and pedantic intellectuals of the '50's said it was going to be."

- Fran Lebowitz
