How long have you been in your group support role and what made you decide that you wanted to take on this role?

I have been an on-spot Sharing Circle Host for a while now i lost track of time. I wanted to take on this role because Sharing circles are supportive and we can really see we are not alone there.

What do you feel is the biggest challenge in your Mod or Room Supporter Role?

I think a challenge for me as a Room Supporter is managing other's expectations and set the rules of the rooms as well as get people engaged without being rude and interrupting.

Could you share any tips or thoughts that may be helpful to other Mods or Room Supporters?

The support room 24/7 that I was looking after said that they need Mods/ Room supporters around more often. They would apprecaite more structures too. Also, many newbies can only access Sharing Circles and they don't know what to do since they are still new to this side, hence they might interrupt the sharing circle.. Might be if there is a way to welcome the newbie somehow and teach them about sharing circle/ support group chats before they accidently entering them ?

How has your experiences, in general, as a Mod or as a Room Supporter been so far?

It has been quite challenging but also rewarding, I'm grateful for the peer supports i got from fellow listeners and from my mentors.

Do you have any feedback or questions for the mod or room supporter roles? Please feel free to message these people or reply to this thread and we can help out!

I was assigned as room supporters for a few subcommunities, and their leaders were on self-care break at the same times hence it was hard to reach out and to start geting my role in motion. Would love if the the leader is on self-care break then they can delegate the task to someone else to welcome and train new room supporters.

@kindLemonade

Thank you for your feedback and response! Leaders should keep things in their community running if they are going on a self care break, with the support room 24/7 point, we are trying to get more leaders in that room, with the Coverage Project. And for newbies entering rooms for the first time, they are not aware of the specific sharing circle rules, as they are not in the chatroom rules I don't believe, here over in Teen Side, when someone new enters, someone sends the link of the SC Guidelines, so that could help that situation.

@kieran000

Hi kieran, thanks for replying. I agree that when a newbie enter, we do send out guidelines. but it would be too late then. sometimes when newbies got in to Sharing Circle, they started venting without reading, and because of that there were several cases that members who followed the guidelines well , ended up feeling disrespected ,dissappointed and hurt because of the SC.

@kindLemonade

I have suggested to add a pop up on people's screens. When they enter a room, it will pop up with information about that room and the rules in it, before they can message. It has been passed on to admins, just waiting, do you feel that would help?

How long have you been in your group support role and what made you decide that you wanted to take on this role?

I have been in 35+ and over for almost 4 years. I am not STL and Chatroom Mod for the room

What do you feel is the biggest challenge in your Mod or Room Supporter Role?

My biggest challenge is trying to keep the room safe from certain topics being discussed in the room. I feel some may trigger others and should move to a 1-1 chat.

Could you share any tips or thoughts that may be helpful to other Mods or Room Supporters? I keep an open support for all helping anyway I can. I also share with others things to work together as a team.

woohoo! thank you kieran for making this awesome post and opportunity to get to know each other!

How long have you been in your group support role and what made you decide that you wanted to take on this role?

i've been in my group support role for over 4 months! i decided that quality, support and safety were big priorities of mine, so taking on leadership group support roles was a great fit for me!

What do you feel is the biggest challenge in your Mod or Room Supporter Role?

i feel one of the biggest challenge is mod hate! unfortunately when you moderate not everyone agrees, and personal attacks can happen because of that

Could you share any tips or thoughts that may be helpful to other Mods or Room Supporters?

some tips for other mods or room supporters are:

  • don't be afraid to ask for help! there are lots of other mods or MLs who would be more than willing to help you out in tough situations
  • don't take mod hate personally - although it can be really hurtful to have other people act disrespectfully towards you, it's out of anger in the moment and they probably don't mean it. you're just doing your role, so don't be afraid to mod when you have to Red heart
  • always remember that you're doing an incredible job and you're so appreciated!!

How has your experiences, in general, as a Mod or as a Room Supporter been so far?

my experience has been really great so far! i love being a familiar face in the chatrooms and being able to support members while keeping the rooms safe!

How long have you been in your group support role and what made you decide that you wanted to take on this role?

I've been a room supporter since like last week. I decided I wanted to be a room supporter because I like being in the rooms and would love to support them and keep it a welcoming envirmonment.

What do you feel is the biggest challenge in your Mod or Room Supporter Role?

The biggest challenge in being a RS is solving conflicts between members in the group support rooms.

Could you share any tips or thoughts that may be helpful to other Mods or Room Supporters?

When in doubt, go for icebreakers, check in on people who were involved in any conflict, keep a supportive environment, don't play favorites, remember to remain professional at all times, and self care breaks help a lot. It's okay to make mistakes as long as you are learning from them.

How has your experiences, in general, as a Mod or as a Room Supporter been so far?

Being a room supporter has been great and have met many great people who have this role and people who are mods.

How long have you been in your group support role and what made you decide that you wanted to take on this role?

I have been a room supporter for maybe 2 months or so (?). I honestly didn't pay attention to the when of it. I enjoy participating on this site as a volunteer and was actually recruited into the role. Thought I would give it a whirl, and I found that I liked it.

What do you feel is the biggest challenge in your Mod or Room Supporter Role?

I haven't been too challenged so far. Keeping up when the room is super busy can be a challenge, though! I am assigned to the 24/7 support room, and it's a different vibe every time I enter.

Could you share any tips or thoughts that may be helpful to other Mods or Room Supporters?

I think I agree with some of the earlier comments that we can't take anything that happens personally. It's important to know our role and keep it all in perspective when the mod hate or the difficult situations pop up. We are all here to support one another, so if it starts feeling unenjoyable, it's time to take a self-care break, right?

How has your experiences, in general, as a Mod or as a Room Supporter been so far?

I just finished the mod application process last night, actually. I am enjoying the experience.

Do you have any feedback or questions for the mod or room supporter roles? Please feel free to message these people or reply to this thread and we can help out!

I'm good right now. Thank you for the past, current and future support!

Hey @kieran000 , great idea , thankyou ! ❤

How long have you been in your group support role and what made you decide that you wanted to take on this role?

Been an ,on the spot host for sharing circles for almost over 9 months , and a Room Supporter then a Mod for over 6 months.

I wanted to take a role in group support as from my experience in the room earlier it was evident how many people seek support in a group setting, and how important it becomes that all feeel welcomed , included, heard , acknowledged , and appreciated....all while being in a safe setting where seeking support is more comfortable. That's exactly what inspired me to take on roles like RS and Mod , to effectively offer support in groupchats .

What do you feel is the biggest challenge in your Mod or Room Supporter Role?

Biggest challenge would be when de escalation is not helping and members are not cooperating and being rude , expressing mod hate .

Could you share any tips or thoughts that may be helpful to other Mods or Room Supporters?

For RS -:

○ You took the first step towards supporting in a group setting, it can be overwhelming at first, so please do take your time, getting familiar with the role and the room structure

○ Before jumping to the Mod role , I'd really suggest spending enough time in those rooms to get comfortable and to understand the group dynamics

For Mods -:

○ Be a familiar face , not just someone who is present to Mod but to engage in conversations and be approachable too

○ Always keep your well being first, group chats can go from 0 to 100 in seconds, never hesitate to step away when feeling the need , Super okay to ask for back up support also .

○ Dealing with Mod hate :(

..this one is extremely difficult, as we do sometimes are seen as the epitome for being stern in the group support, but know that you're only doing what's required, keeping the room safe and supportive for all , it's hard to not take someone's words to heart but it does help to remember that it is not personal to You , Only some strong feelings against the green Mod badge .

○ Stepping to up to support rooms ....woohoo you're doing so well already! Just remember to take breaks and asking for support too , when needed !

Describe ur experiences, in general, as a Mod or as a Room Supporter been so far?

My experiences so far as a Room Supporter and a Moderator have been a mix of good and bad , and certainly a learning curve ! Always something to learn here , and to adapt our RS and Mod styles as per the room we are in !

Do you have any feedback or questions for the mod or room supporter roles? Please feel free to message these people or reply to this thread and we can help out

I feel the requirement of 2 weeks as RS before moving to Mod role is way less , in the beginning it may feel great to have higher roles , but then it also becomes overwhelming and leads to burn out specially for new leaders also since there has been a requirement change in RS and now they don't even need to become Verified before applying for this role , I'd really suggest increasing the time span so that RS 's get more used to the roles In group chatrooms .

Hi @keiran000,

Apologies for the delay in response. Not sure why the tag didn’t show up in my notifications. Also kinda my fault for not checking forums regularly as I am on a self-care break this week.

How long have you been in your group support role and what made you decide that you wanted to take on this role?
I’ve been a group support session host since Dec. 2020, but I didn’t take on room support and mod roles till mid march of 2021. Specifically, I’ve been a mod since April 7th, 2021. I wanted to take on this role because I was already helping out with de-escalating situations in rooms when com mods were busy in other rooms. As well as com mods suggested that I take on the role to have access to tools to better help out and believed I had what it takes to become a mod.

What do you feel is the biggest challenge in your Mod or Room Supporter Role?
I feel the biggest challenge in my mod role is the lack of communication and coordination between moderators. For example, I would DM com mod telling them I’ll do SR check-in for whatever hour they were on shift for and com mod responds and agrees that I’m doing the session. A few minutes later, another mod comes out of nowhere and starts a check-in session in SR with no heads up to com mod or anyone else for that matter, forcing me out of a session I was supposed to host. Another example of lack of communication would be when I message com mods asking them to back me up in a certain room, they often don’t check the DM till the incident has already dissolved (like 20-40 minutes later). I can’t speak for others, but I know this has discouraged me from working regularly with certain com mods and helping them out during their shifts. Because it made me feel like we’re on our own in a sense and don’t know where the other mods are if we need back up.

Could you share any tips or thoughts that may be helpful to other Mods or Room Supporters?
Personally, I would suggest you create organized notes for frequently used links in group chats. Links such as how to unlock other rooms, the welcome pack for members, mod review form, ER mod request, username change form, and so on. The last thing you want to do while de-escalating a heated situation that requires your full attention is to divert some of our attention into trying to find a link. Another thing to note is that you’ll develop your own style of de-escalation as you become more experienced and there’s a chance that your style might conflict with another mod or room supporter’s de-escalation style and that’s alright. We’re working towards the same goal but each has our own approach.

How has your experiences, in general, as a Mod or as a Room Supporter been so far?
My experience as a mod in general has been great so far. Modding does come with many of its own challenges but it is certainly rewarding. Com mods have helped me a lot in learning what it means to mod and how to handle tough situations. Joining them for shifts, doing debriefs after tough situations, and so on, has often been the highlight of my day. But I also understand how impactful mod hate is and can be because that’s also something I’ve had to deal with. The community is here to support you, and it’s alright to take time off for self-care.

Do you have any feedback or questions for the mod or room supporter roles?
Can we get some clarity for adult side SR room events? It appears that adult SR coverage hosts don’t have SR check-in scripts and SR check-in hosts don’t have the schedule for SR coverage sessions. I have personally found myself in a situation where the SR coverage host for the hour was having an event in SR with a banner, but I was supposed to host SR check-in that same hour. I DMed com mods but none seem to be aware of what’s happening with these two teams.

@richuyulin

Thank you for responding, and I see your feedback, I am unaware of these SR Check-Ins that are done as I am a teen, if a check in session is going on, or is scheduled, the coverage host should remove their banner if asked, and let the check in banner replace it, and the coverage host can support the check in session, by joining in with the session appropriately! I will help to make adult coverage hosts aware of this and same with check-in hosts! Thank you!
