People Suffering from Addiction?

As someone who has struggled with substance abuse in the past, I was wondering how many people on this site had similar experiences. I find that it's not something that I come across a lot as a listener.

I think it is not something a lot of people are very open about (sadly) so maybe many listeners choose not to put it in their profiles ,personally I do not have experience of this myself but a lot of members seem to , I really think this should be a option in the categories list. I bet you would be amazing at speaking to members about this.

I am so glad that I found this thread.

Firstly, I completely agree that Addiction should be in the list of categories. It was the first thing that I looked for when I found this website and was a bit disappointed when it wasn't there.

Secondly, because of how difficult (and common) trying to overcome a serious addiction is, this would be a very helpful tool for getting people through a moment of weakness and desire. I spent a few years as a sponsor in NA after completing my steps and deciding to take the better road in life and, from that experience, have gained a lot of really valuable insight.

I could only hope to help those who have walked in the same shoes that I once did and let them know that there is actually a light at the end of that tunnel.

I'm really glad that I'm not the only one on here who is willing to help people suffering from addiction :)

I have only been a member for a few months but I have yet to have a member mention addiction. I've often wondered if it could be due to feelings of shame and embarassment or that fact drug use is illegal (assuming the addiction is drug related of course}.

I definitely think that it's an issue that isn't talked about enough, and I personally think that it isn't talked about because people often see it as a "self-made" problem when in fact it is often the result of improper wiring of the brain.

Yes, very true! As it is a ‘self-made problem, people have hesitation to share their experiences. Im one among them ( ashamed to say this). :( I had been addicted to alcohol for more than 4 years. For me, drinking was a relaxation technique. My mom had suffered a lot by my drinking, she always advised me to stop it. Addiction recovery is not an easy job, I had tried my best to stop it, but the withdrawal symptoms are really hard. It made me depressed and lost. Later, I had joined in Edgewood, an addiction treatment center in Toronto for a better recovery. That was the best decision I had ever made. I think, an expert guidance and family support will help you to be clean and sober.

As a Listener who is now just over 4 months sober and dealing with my addiction and everything that goes with it I have to say that I have had a few people bring it up with me in my chats with them. I do have on my profile alcohol/drugs category and that I am part of AA, perhaps that is why I have had some people ask and tell me about their issues.

I really wasn't expecting to have a lot of people bring it up as it is a very hard subject to broach with someone if they are still in denial they aren't going to admit it even with this being anonymous. This just my two cents... Bright Blessings... Michael

I will be honest I think I have strong cases of addiction. They have led me down a very dark road mentally and physically and it is difficult to even think about how selfish I've been over the past few years addiction and being stubborn will be the end of me

I would think it would be something a lot of people talk about I for one have been an addict off and on for 7 yrs I will say this.. You hear people so that drugs are the problem if you just get clean your life would be better I call bullshit on that. I think the problems are there way before the drug use. NM Or saying the drugs don't make it worse for everyone .I'm just saying if you take the drugs out of the pic you still have a very messed up person with lots of pressure s and depression anxiety you name it.. Most people don't start drugs for the fun of it .they are trying to cover up some kind of.

I complete agree with that. I am in recovery for alcoholism, I am going to AA and a therapist and for the most part it is always trying to find out what I am trying to run from and hide away from the pain. I am still trying to figure that out, but the addiction has always been with me in way or another. If it wasn't a alcohol than it was something else to feel good and not be myself for even a short amount of time.

It's kind of horrible to say but I am addicted to PMO. My mind is so twisted and warped and it prevents me from feeling any kind of happiness if only for a moment. I'm sick and tired of this meaningless cycle that's draining every ounce of my energy away and making my body feel torn apart from head to abdomen. I guess this is what I get for being a single child born to a single mother and both of us are only children.
