TW- self harm brief mentions of death, ed, and abuse

most people dont really consider self harm an addiction, but for me it was. the release i felt when i did the behavior, was immense. I started harming regularly when i was 11 years old, however I have been doing those behaviors for as long as i could remember.

Fast foward to 2024. Im 16, and struggling. My body reflects years of @abuse and damage. i ended up doing something idek what and i accidentally slipped up. i mentioned that my hip was hurting. they asked why. they next text would change my life. i told them what was happening. And i didnt get pity in response, like my irl friends gave me. Or just oh im sorry. instead i got

"promise me you wont, ever again"

i told them i couldnt promise that, and they said whats the longest youve gone. I said 6 months. They said promise me a year.

That was 1 year ago today. 365 days. 8760 hours. 525600 minutes. 31536000 seconds, since the last time i harmed myself.

it wasnt an easy year either. I wanted to relapse so many times. I lost a very dear family to me. I got devastating health news. I got tragically ill and almost unalived. I dated the 2nd abusive man ive ever dated in my short life. I lost my faith. I lost friends.

But i also found myself. I remembered how to smile. How good it felt to show my skin without shame. I made new friends. I flourished. I got my life back on track. i started eating again. ive fallen in love. im applying to colleges. i got off my SSRI. im able to be around sharp objects.

i wont lie. the thoughts havent gone away, and i dont think they ever will. its how my brain works. and i dont know if my sobriety will be permanent. and thats okay

what i do know is i promised to make a change, and i did.

and thank u to everyone who supported me during this long stressful battle

now we ponder what tattoo i get to cover my least favorite scars (:<

Thank you for your courage in opening up.

Your honesty might help another person to do the same.

And to see that healing is possible.

You should be so proud of your strength 💜💕

Hey Avy, it's me Ross.

It's been a while, close to a year and a half.

I'm not sure what brought me back to cups tonight, maybe it was the reminiscing of the past, or my inability to let go.

Either way, I'm glad I came back. Because I can see this post.

TW: light mention of sh

Some days I forget about my scars. Really! I do!
They just seem to blend into how I see myself. I don't even think about them. They are one with me, I am one with them.

I'm only reminded of them when the occasional person brings them up. When that happens, I panic. Suddenly I'm reminded of my very real consequences of growth.
I'm embarrassed, ashamed! I realize that everyone can see my scars. They were probably looking and judging this whole time.

But when I stop and think about it, something changes inside of me...
The only reason I even have these scars to begin with, is because I survived so much worse.
The only reason I can lay here and type this today is because of those scars. Those scars tell the whole world that not only did I fight the impossible, but I won. I won...

My scars are ugly, butt ugly. But they remind the world that I am not something to be messed with, I beat much worse than what I have to come.

All of that to say, this is such a beautiful post Avy.

Not only is it heartwarming to hear how you are doing, but it reminds me how we won.

We won. Even when we loose. We still won.
Isn't that something.

Anyways, long time no talk huh. I hope you're doing well, or at least still moving.

I'd love to talk to you a little more, before I forget about this place for another two years lol.

To summarize everything, I am so proud of you and happy for you.

Haha, I am so freaking happy you saw this post. I've been checking every single day to see if this post and some others had replies.

It's so cool that you are two years free. It's beautiful what we can do for ourselves when we learn to fly. Haha the reason I made the last so poetic and pretentious is because it was 2 am and I was crying before I saw your post. It made me so happy. TMI lol.

As far as college goes, I am so happy for you! College is a huge step that I think is good for us.

As far as I'm doing. I'm not doing too bad. I hesitate saying good, because life is not exactly where I want it to be yet. But still, growing is a process.

A lot has happened in the last year/ish. I moved out four days after I turned 18, which was scary. Moved into a homeless shelter for young adults in the next town. There I worked as a full time cook, which sucked. The people at the shelter were mostly nice, I think I learned a lot from them.
After working as a cook for a year, I couldn't take it anymore. I saved up barely enough to move into an apartment with my sister. Back in my hometown.

I moved here, and worked over the summer. Now I just started community college.
Community college is interesting. I think it scares me, not just because I have the social ability of a Minecraft villager, but now my future means something.

I can't remember the last time I had a reason to try in school, maybe freshman year. That was a long time ago. Now my future is on me, there is nobody to hold my hand, nobody to guide me, nobody to pick me up when I want to stop.

I'm studying to get into the Medical Imaging program at Oregon Tech. It's a very hard program with a super small acceptance rate. So everything I do counts to my getting in.

But everyday, I tell myself that I will do it. So I believe it.
---

Haha.

Not much has changed with me. No crazy dyed hair, no interesting tattoos, nothing periced that I didn't have priced before, no change in fashion taste (still visibly painfully nerodivergent 😭)
I still cringe when I see my ex girlfriends, I still get mad when people cut me off in traffic, I still spend most of my paycheck before I get it.
I look like Michael Cera, and talk like Nathan Fielder.

But I'd like to think that most of my changes have been mental, and I'm proud of that.
I look at life in a new way than the person you knew. I try every day to use what the world has given to me, and give back to it.
Look at thunderstorms and see the beauty. Fall down and appreciate the new perspective. Get slapped, and turn the other cheek.
I fail a lot, but we all do. The important thing is that I try.

I'm more proud of that than I am about getting out of the homeless shelter. Or anything else lol.

ANYWAYS *** ALL TAHT EMOTUONAL *** IM SO SO FLIPPIN HAPPY THAT ITS GOING FOR YOU AND ASTRA

@Rackson dude just even reading your words I can see how much progress you've made

I can't read the whole thing right now and give you the reply that you deserve, however I did want to tell you that no crazy dyed hair and no tattoos and no piercings is really funny to me

I have two tattoos (one on half my thigh and the other the entire side of my shin) and my hair is purple and black and as soon as my seasonal job ends I'm getting at least two facial piercings 😭😭
