Need support

My husband struggles with alcoholism and has struggled with drug use in the past (I got him to stop the drugs this year, but the alcoholism is still pretty bad). I just need somewhere I can go to talk about my emotions with all of this when he makes himself sick or misses special moments because of the hangovers etc. It hurts and he’s aware it’s a problem but his self esteem goes to 0 when I bring it up, even gently. I just need help please.

@Daybloom

Hello, It is hard to be a partner of a alcoholic period.  I am one.   It is so many things we have to deal with.  covering or trying to be tough and supportive at same time. It chips away at relationship and feelings ... and the roller coaster does not stop.

   My person got sober and he is no fun at all does not want to talk about past as he either does not remember or is ashamed .......not the person i once knew.... his health has caught up and things like dementia and other things show up much later...... kids and family have no sympathy later and no do overs.     If i could reach all people who THINK they are OK or managing that they are lying to themselves.  they need to treat the underlying depression or issues they drank or took drugs to avoid..... problems hidden or pushed down do not wither they lurk.

@toughTiger6481 thank you for your kind words and sharing your experience. It feels good to know I’m not alone. I’ve thought to myself many times it feels like a roller coaster you can’t get odd off of.

Have they considered AA? Someone can stop drinking, but still be a dry drunk- still having the same issues and bad attitude. I found the program to help deal with the character defects that caused the drinking.

@quickwittedWillow6742 thank you. No they haven’t considered it. I don’t believe he’s fully acknowledged it yet.

I would suggest AA for him and possibly alanon for yourself. I'm a recovering alcoholic with 10 years of sobriety. The 10 years I have and the control I now have over my life was only possible because of the AA program and a willingness to participate in suggestions from the group. I know plenty of women and men in the alanonprogram and they are all better off with the knowledge they gained through that program. If you're feeling alone you should absolutely attend a few alanon meetings in your area. Good luck to you.
