Masturbationis thesexual stimulationof one's owngenitalsforsexual arousalor other sexual pleasure, usually to the point oforgasm.

Pornography(often abbreviated as "porn" or "porno" in informal usage) is the portrayal ofsexualsubject matter for the purpose ofsexual arousal. Pornography may be presented in a variety of media, includingbooks, magazines, postcards, photographs, sculpture, drawing, painting, animation, sound recording, film, video, andvideo games. The term applies to the depiction of the act rather than the act itself, and so does not include live exhibitions likesex showsandstriptease. The primary subjects of pornographic depictions are pornographicmodels, who pose for still photographs, andpornographic actorsor porn stars, who perform inpornographic films. If dramatic skills are not involved, a performer in a porn film may also be called a model.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with masturbation or pornography. Obviously if you are hurting yourself or hurting others it may be a good idea to stay away from it. But if you are not hurting anyone, and this includes consuming porn which was made under duress, exploiting the subjects and forcing them to engage in risky behaviors, otherwise, I don't see why one necessarily need stop these practices.

This is a tough one.

Just because someone masturbates or watches porn doesn't mean they're an addict, by any means. If they come to us, as listeners, with an addiction, we should treat it as such -- an addiction. I checked out the links you put here, and they seem... Almost condescending to a point. Especially with the one that talks of masturbation as if it's a problem that needs to be tied in with religion. If you are speaking with a member who explicitly says they have a masturbation addiction, telling them they're wrong because of religious views is totally and utterly inappropriate.

And I just want to put the disclaimer to not try to diagnose someone with a porn/masturbationaddiction just because they talk on it. Know what I mean? Sex-related things can be hard topics, so just remember self care, and remember to not jump to conclusions.

Cadence you are right.

The religious link you are reffering to says the exact meaning what you are refferingto

They say mastrubationis common in adult males but they feel bad because of religious preachings and psychologically think that they are going in wrong direction.

Hi Cadence,

You might want to check out the Site's approved training guide for this issue. It talks about the concerns you bring up here. There are a couple of links you might feel more comfortable with as well.

Addiction is usually characterized by three things. Obsession, meaning you can't stop thinking about it. Compulsion, meaning you can't stop doing it. And unmanageablity, meaning it is impairing in sone way one or more aspects of your life.

I think it really comes down to what we are here for:listening.Just listening. People might be experiencing negative feelings around sexuality for all sorts of reasons and it's up to us to listen, hear them out no matter which direction they're coming from, and if we can, to make them feel better about their problem. Our job is not necessarily to solve their problem for them, whatever that may be.

i think we're way to quick to call something an addiction if it's related to sex
