Ive been using a medication which contains phenobarbital, as well as sedatives fully made of herbs (including Valerian) and ill tel you my opinion - its quite strong. Valerian is relatively mild, suitable only for a short term and delicate effect. But it all depends on the perseverance of your nervous system actually. If you want either to enhance the effects of other sedatives or just get a mild but sufficient effect - valerian is 100% suitable.

Hello. I tried to use it for my temporary sleeplessness issues a few years ago, and it didn't help much. I still couldn't fall asleep.

As for using it as a tranquilliser, the danger is always the same: it's much healthier to go through your emotions and work on them than to reach some "artificial calmness" by using herbs or medicals. It can be psychically addictive in the long term (by e.g. sabotaging your mind's natural coping mechanisms).

From my experience: never mix a valeriane at noon with coffee in the morning!
