Aging parents

When I was born, my mom was 40 and my dad was 43. They are in their late 50’s now, and I’m starting to notice that they aren’t as energetic or able to move as easily as they used to. I’m terrified because I’m not even 18 yet. My dad already needs surgery on both hips, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t stop thinking about losing them. I have no idea how I will continue to live when they’re gone, it will be too much. Does anyone else have older parents? Please tell me how you cope.

Hello lovely

I'm sorry to hear that your dad is having to have surgery. But feel assured that this is to help him in the long run. My manager had a hip replacement about six months ago and she is in her 50s and since then she has travelled the UK in caravan having the time of her life.

I too have older parents, my mum was in her late 40s and dad was in his late 50s so I understand your worries and fears. My father actually passed away when I was 18 but he was in his 70s so he live a wonderful and long life. My mum who is in coming to her 80th birthday next day is still with us, and I try and spend as much time as I possibly can with her.

Lates 50s is still relatively young, people are living longer now, so please don't worry yourself for the worst, i know its easier said than done. But try and make every moment special and enjoy the life that you have with them.

Its a blessing that you are thinking about this now, you are a special daughter/son, because alot of people think about it when its too late. Seize the moment and have love and gratitude for your parents and make everlasting memories x

@creativeYard2846 I think I know some of what you mean. I returned home after some semesters in school and my parents seemed to just age before my eyes. My dad has so many little things that causes him discomfort. My mum has a bad leg. And it's scary seeing how their bodies have shrunk now they are in their 60's. I only hope they'll be around long enough that we'll make them proud but I'm unsure if anything can make it easier.
