Anxiety and self- worth

June 13th, 2020

Hello members and listeners of the 7 cups community! I hope you are all doing great.

I was recently thinking about the impact anxiety can have on the lives of those who struggle with it. Being one of those people, I couldnt help but remember how many times my anxiety has prevented me from doing things I really wanted to do, how many times it has disrupted my sleep, my eating habits, my relaxation, my socialization.

While thinking about this issue, I realized that my anxiety often leads me to thinking that Im not enough. That Im not enough for my friends, as Im socially awkward and have difficulty in attending very crowded places. That Im not enough for my family, as I get overwhelmed by stress and cannot offer to them as much as I want to. That Im not enough for school/ work, because new responsibilities scare me.

Is that the truth? I dont think so. Our anxiety doesnt make us less capable of doing things nor does it imply that we are not enough. Even if we encounter struggles on a daily basis, we are still powerful and nothing can diminish our worth. All humans are unique and, although anxiety is something we may dislike or even despise, its something we may have to face, in order to become even stronger.

There are moments when we just need to remind ourselves how worthy and strong we are… We are so much more than our anxiety... Aren't we?

Thank you for this.

I struggled with anxiety all my life.

But I never stopped moving forward. And the empathy it taught me is irreplacable.

I'm so glad you always move forward, it's admirable! When it comes to the empathy it has taught you, I hadn't thought about this a lot in the past, but I can definitely see how it's associated with anxiety now- I can relate. ❤️

Hi. I just came across this and I just want to say I agree with everything you said and this describes me 100%! I have been dealing with self worth and anxiety my whole life and continue to deal with it to this day. It doesn't help that I often get overlooked because of my shyness, awkwardness, and anxiety but I continue to push through. Anxiety should not and does not define who we are and/or our self worth. We are great people who can do great things and can be amazing friends given the chance. I am beyond blessed to have my amazing fiancé by my side everyday as well as my 2 best friends of over 20 years! I need to and will continue to work on reminding myself of my worth everyday even if it's a bad day. Thank you for your words and inspiration!

Thank you so much, this has really helped, sometimes I am so paralysed by anxiety that I cannot even begin tasks and then everythig comes down like a house of cards and other times I need the pressure of anxiety to drive me to do more than my best
