Disassociating for over a month
Hello everyone, this is my first ever post on here. I’d like to know if anyone on here as dealt with disassociation for anytime longer than a few hours. For me, this has been going on since the end of December. I feel so detached from reality, at times the feeling is so strong, it’s scary how nothing feels real. I feel best when it’s not at the forefront of my mind. I’m able to take my mind off of it temporarily, but then I’m right back to these thoughts like, “What am I doing? Did I just do that? Are they really standing in front of me and speaking? Do I look crazy to them?”. If anyone knows how to cope with this please let me know. I tried seeing a doctor for anxiety and few months ago, but they said it would be weeks before an appointment. I even have severe anxiety over calling the doctors office. I know I need to, but the thought of it makes me sick. Thanks for reading.
Yes.
and I wish I could talk to someone about this myself.
Dissociation, depersonalization, both are such a strange phenomena it seems it’s not very common and sadly just isn’t much genuine help for it.
like you said, or I’ll say, the therapist just doesn’t get it at all or wants to jump to oh you have such and such and the psychiatrist prescribed about…6-8 different things all of which I had allergic reactions to (anaphylaxis, heart racing, even full blown attacks and the psych doc even after the first one was dismissive and was like here try this instead) of which their usage was for things I’ve never even experienced.
it’s as if ppl are adequate or qualified but I was hoping here maybe someone else knew of this strangeness that gets extremely uncomfortable.
idk where to go or who to talk to abt this.
to try and explain it, well, there’s clearly a perfect word and definition for it in my case which may be close to yours with the term being “depersonalization” and what you said “dissociation”.
it makes the world and surroundings even at home very bizarre and worrisome to say the least.
have you found anything (cognitive skill, hobby, food, listener, etc) to help cope and evolve from this phenomena?
Hi, yeah from what I’ve read dissociative disorders are really uncommon. I’m so sorry about your experience with medication. I have read though, that talk therapy is very effective. Since I don’t have a therapist yet*, I’ve taken up journaling and that is pretty helpful. I would suggest it if you are keeping things to yourself, it feels really good to have outside of my brain. Exercise helps, playing the guitar, and being outside which is super grounding. Let me if you try any of those things.
@targetscrub Hello there! Dissociation for a longer period of time can most likely happen if you are still in the situation that caused the initial dissociative episode. However, there may be an underlying cause (such as a dissociative disorder) causing these long-term dissociative episodes. The best I can say is to seek professional help for it. I wish you the best <3
i think you are right with it happens more when being around where it started or happened previously.
well, that was a better response and education vs nothing in trying to figure this out and get help.
IK you only responded to the OP but ty. I never made that realization that it indeed does happen more say downstairs or in a certain room (for me personally)
Hi, it’s interesting because I started feeling this way right before I had back to back plans of travel/being away from homes for two weeks. So, I was hoping that being back home would make it go away, but unfortunately it’s a month later and I still feel like this. And thank you very much! I actually made a doctors appointment right after I made my initial post. Thank you for being apart of this space.
*aren’t adequate or qualified. Typing that they “are” qualified couldn’t be farther from the truth. Just correcting that real quick. Sry it was a typo.
