Stressed Student with Unsupportive Mom
So I've been really stressed about my future. I'm a freshman at college, I hate my major (Computer Science) and I'm doing quite poor in those classes. I can spend up to 15 hours per week per assignment for that class and get only half credit. I'm losing my scholarships because of it. When I try to talk to my mom about changing my major, she says I'm a quitter and that I'm not trying hard enough which really hurts because I'm really putting my soul into it. Because of this, I've become kinda depressed. I've lost motivation to come to class and to get homework done. I dont go to the gym anymore and I get bad anxiety thinking about the future. I've tried finding a counselor at school, and honestly, it's really scary for me. I'm at a loss 😕

Welcome to the board! Does your mom understand how miserable you are with your current major? If you continue with a major you hate, you're going to end up wasting time (and money) on something you have no passion for, and in the end you're not going to work in that field anyway.
Was this a major you wanted initially, or was it something that others suggested would be good for you?

I'm a freshie, so this was my first choice. I thought I'd like it, but I dont. My mom just won't listen. I try expressing how miserable I am and she doesn't care. She just wants me doing this for whatever weird reason. I try telling her it's not her choice to make, then she screams at me

I was in the exact same boat 2 years ago. I enrolled in computer science because I like technology and had no idea where I was going.
My advice to you is to switch majors. I switched into IT because I hate programming but love technology. Follow your own path, don't let her tell you what to do.
@Rock34 Exactly! Liking cool tech is waaaay different than creating it. How do you like IT?
@CarefulSea3131 There's a lot less programming involved and is more theory focused but that's because I'm in university.
If you're really interested in technology and getting a hands on experience look into small private colleges and various IT certifications. Comptia A+ is a good place to start with certification.

You're not alone buddy. In my first year when the prof asked people "Who wants to be a programmer?" most of the class raised their hand. In my previous semester the same question was asked by a different prof and only a few people raised their hands.

@CarefulSea3131 I get that. She may call you a quitter, but if you truly hate your major, change to something you'll love. Set YOURSELF up for success. You probably want to talk to your mom about her saying things like that and how that's been affecting you. Good luck!
@sympatheticTurtle2151 Yea, that's what I'll do next semester. I try but she doesn't care. She shifts blame on me or calls me ungrateful, etc. It's toxic being around her, but she's still my mother
@BreathingForest Changing you major ISN'T quitting. It's doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing in college. You are growing and learning what works for you. My son is a junior in college and the school is very direct that most students change their minors at least once before graduation. As long as you are thoughful and purposeful in your decisions, then there is nothing wrong with it.
