Terrible PMS anxiety and depression

For the last 6 months to a year, the week before, during and sometimes after my period I've been experiencing severe depression. I've just recently started experiencing severe anxiety in place of the depression around this time of the month. It's always the same. A little less than a week before my period I start to feel anxious, needing to leave work early and calling in sick because of it. Sometimes I just lay in bed and cry for hours. Some months it's worse than others. Does anyone else experience this? I'm so frustrated. I've already contacted a psychiatrist and I have an appointment next month but I just want to know if anyone else is going through the same thing? What have you done to help manage the symptoms? TIA ❤️

Hi! Maybe research PMDD (Pre Menstrual Dysmorphic Disorder) and see if the listed symptoms routinely describe your symtoms. It's like PMS++++++. I have it to a certain extent according to the docs, but it's hard to say where it begins and my Bipolar symptoms end. My experience hasn't been that it lasts NEARLY 3 WEEKS of the month, as you have stated. Mine has a peak around ovuation (midpoint in your cycle) and ramps up into horror-fest right around the week before Aunt /Flo comes knocking, and for the 1st 2 1/2-3 days of bleeding.

Good luck! It's terrible to feel so cruddy so much of the time, especially if you believe it's going to return over and over again on a monthly basis.

@compassionateLight77 I have the same thing going on too...depression that rears it's head the worst at PMS time and now I'm getting anxiety and panic attacks too. Dealing with the symptoms....try to find someone who can be there for you, even just a little bit. It's hard to find someone to be there for you all the time but a little here and there from different people might help.

For me writing about it helps. And a lot of self-care and self-love...be understanding toward yourself.

@compassionateLight77 I have experienced this since going off the pill. About 10 days before the start of my period, I will start to become very anxious. I will also randomly become incredibly sad for either no reason or some really miniscule reason. I'm sure it's due to some sort of hormonal imbalance but knowing that doesn't make it any easier. It tends to interfere with all of my interpersonal relationships as well as my work/school life.
