What should i do about this person?

I have this friend for 3 years now and we are generally good friends and i i think that he is a good person however, i have always harbored some fear in him. We had a few arguments (they are quite minor) and he punishes you greatly when you commit a mistake which left me walking on eggshells a few times. Everyone loves him and its not hard to see why but it seems like people are scared of him as well. I don't know if its its age factor (he is older than everyone) or his charisma but in my case, i'm afraid of messing things up with him because im afraid of being rejected by everyone because of his "power" over our friends and people in general. When people try to call him out on his mistakes, he reacts greatly and at times will flip the situation so it comes out as you are the one at fault. His reactions really scare me and im im afraid of coming off as a shitty friend for feeling this way, what should i do? I feel terrified and stuck
