Comments made about my facial expressions

July 3rd, 2015

All my life family members and strangers have commented on my normal facial expression, it's been described as serious, angry, lost (I really don't get that), a frown and not cheerful. The sad thing is only up until last year when I realised I had social anxiety did I notice that people where right after seeing myself in mirrors and window reflections just that the whole time I was in denial and thought I looked content not all the things they said. Now I'm trying to make an effort not to look so serious or unhappy but it's not natural for me to walk around with a grin on my face for no reason, I've tried practicing in the mirror which worked for a while when friends noticed I was smiling a lot but then I always seem to go back to my normal expression. Has any one else been told they need to smile more? Or had comments made about their normal facial expression especially in public?

yes I've been told I have a resting bitch face. I always look uninterested, angry, sad, like something's wrong. I've always had this face but I don't mean too. after my pregnancy I haven't been feeling sooo great like depression has really taken over and I feel how I look but I can't help it. on the regular if I'm not doing anything I have this "face" and people constantly tell me to smile or ask what's wrong but a lot of the time nothing is wrong. recently thoo i haven't felt great emotionally soo the face makes sense

I hear you 100%. I have had this condition since I was a little girl. Everyone always said I was a serious looking little kid. Well almost daily for decades someone tells me to "smile" or "it's not so bad" or "what's wrong?", etc. I know they mean well but damn, after years and years of it I just want to tell them to bug off. Lately now that "bitchy resting face" is kind of a somewhat "known" thing, I just tell them about it, but many still keep on asking me to smile. I get what you mean totally by it's not normal to smile all the time? I don't get why I would just be smiling all the time for no reason. Well at any rate, I too am trying to look less serious, like relax my face muscles or whatever, because I'm very unapproachable and intimidating-looking. I also have no friends, and I'm sure this is part of the reason.

Yes,actuallyalmosteveryonehastoldmemynormalexpressionseemslikeI'mangry, sad, orunhappy.People sayeven when I smile,my facestill looks like I'm unhappy. My friend said maybe it's because the shape of my eyes, which is the thing I can't change unless I put on makeup. So,when some people ask me some questions like "what's wrong?","are you angry?","are you sad?" I will just let them know I'm fine, this is just how my normal expression looks.

I'm so glad to find someone else who has this problem, even though my face says otherwise. I have been told by people to smile more or why I'm so sad/angry. I look at my pictures and it often looks like I'm sad, even about to cry! Even though that's actually me trying to smile. I really need to work on it too...

We are so alike I too look at pictures of me thinking I'm smiling and looking happy but nope I look really sad and like I'm gonna burst onto tears. I recently had an old man walk past me saying smile, I just don't know how to just look content : (

I've tried practicing in front of a mirror :p but it's not like I can change that easily... I wish people wouldn't care that much, it's just the pictures that bother me because they are forever :S

My family has always said I have this face where you can't tell what mood I'm in. Honestly internally I'm quite happy and bubnly. But it's like I can't express it outward. I wonder if that is why not many people like me because I look mean or upset.

I have the same problem. In elementary teachers would tell me to smile and ask me why i wasn't happy it made me self consious and so angry that I would never smile in spite of them. It made me suer self consious about my body laguage and now I hate my smile and all of my expressions.

Oh, I get sooo many comments on my "resting bitch face", and they bother me very much. My parents, my teachers, and my friends constantly tell me to smile more, but I really think I smile a lot, and that their comments are just judging my average expression.

I have this issue too. I can be having so much fun, be eating my favorite food, opening gifts etc and just look annoyed, serious and sometimes angry. hahahaha I swear I'm not- it's just how I look. I have anxiety/social anxiety. I sometimes feel exhausted from fake smiling when I meet new people. I want to make a good impression- so I force a smile the whole time we are talking. Then I worry that they can tell it's forced and that I'm being weird. That's because I am being weird. I just want to be myself and relax my face. hahaha. But I don't want people who just met me to make assumptions about me so I over compensate.

Yes sometimes I was told I look sad, or people ask me what's wrong. I have social anxiety, and I used to be a lot more self conscious about my face and its expressions in the past. But lately, I've been working on being more accepting and grateful. I am more accepting of myself regardless of how I look, and that in itself has helped me feel more at ease, so I don't get those types of comments as often. But I try to be okay with those comments and self conscious thoughts about myself if they do pop up again, because what can we do if we're told that. It doesn't really matter what other people think as long as we're okay with ourselves :) Stay strong <3
