Comments made about my facial expressions
All my life family members and strangers have commented on my normal facial expression, it's been described as serious, angry, lost (I really don't get that), a frown and not cheerful. The sad thing is only up until last year when I realised I had social anxiety did I notice that people where right after seeing myself in mirrors and window reflections just that the whole time I was in denial and thought I looked content not all the things they said. Now I'm trying to make an effort not to look so serious or unhappy but it's not natural for me to walk around with a grin on my face for no reason, I've tried practicing in the mirror which worked for a while when friends noticed I was smiling a lot but then I always seem to go back to my normal expression. Has any one else been told they need to smile more? Or had comments made about their normal facial expression especially in public?
I have social anxiety. It's not pretty because you can't really control your emotions and how you feel!!! It's constantly overwhelming and made me push away so many people.. So you're not alone . People (even friends) always call me a bitch for NO reason.... Like I don't do anything to them ... accept ... I'm "shy" so people thing I'm being rude to them. What you need to do here is go apologize be like I'm sorry if it looks like I'm being rude but it's just my face I'm really not trying to be disrespectful to anyone . And DO NOT just simply smile all the time , do it to an extinct . With social anxiety, I tend to smile all the freaking time and it makes me look like a freak. Good luck!!! ONLY YOU KNOW THE REAL YOU, YOURE AMAZING, SO DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS BECAUSE UNLESS THEY WENT THROUGH IT, they don't know my friend :) 🍉
Oh my gosh, I can relate to the freakish smile thing. I am so awkward 😁 lol! Thought I was the only one who did that!
I can relate to the feeling like I look like a freak when I smile a lot, I don't struggle with this as much anymore, but I remember trying to look happier, and I felt self-conscious about that as well because I felt like people were judging me for looking weird being so "smiley" constantly.
"With social anxiety, I tend to smile all the freaking time and it makes me look like a freak"
I laughed so hard, thats hilarious because I relate and it happens almost every day if I'm not cursed with constant "resting bitch face"
Thanks for starting this thread, @GettyAngel. It's interesting to see so many people have had similar experiences! Whenever I meet someone who's often misunderstood due to their appearance, I'm reminded of a puppy Kurt Vonnegut described:
"Sparky could not wag his tail—because of an automobile accident many years ago, so he had no way of telling other dogs how friendly he was. He had to fight all the time. His ears were in tatters."
Luckily for us as humans, we can express ourselves in other ways. It's a shame that we can't get around first impressions, but at least as we get to know people, we can explain that our feelings don't match our facial expressions. Hopefully once people get to know us, they can pick up on our unique cues, so that appearances are less of a barrier.
Poor puppy :(
Just wish I could stop coming off mean or fake especially @ interviews. I get nervous & blank & stuff comes out sounding really fake & I have weird expressions cuz I'm tryna not show how nervous I am. I'm afraid ppl think my tension is cuz of them.
I've been told a lot that I look unhappy or angry about things, when I'm not. It's frustrating, but as you all say it seems to be my default resting face, so it's difficult to change. I've got to the stage now where my standard response is 'I am fine; my face just doesn't know it yet'. Because worrying about it all the time is frankly tiring. I've tried changing it but it feels so unnatural that I'll never be able to keep it up.
I've had this issue too. I have what is known as a worry frown, which I hadn't noticed until I was asked why I looked so angry. I looked back at them puzzled because at the time, I never noticed anything. Ever since I've tried to stop it, trying to relax a bit more. I've been told that facial exercises can help too, but I would feel really stupid just sitting there pulling a face all the time. It annoys me so much when I'm asked. "What's the matter with you now?" In a bitter tone, and I'm like, "what do you mean?" I don't know why or what causes it, but I just wish it would go away!😢
I've gotten the comment as yall for years! Part of it is just the way my lips sit ...they look like I'm pouting and mad loll, and when I'm concentrating its worse be issue I press them together and of course I'm looking down (studying , reading , whatever). I also noticed recently though thag because of social anxiety my jaw gets tense and eyebrows are too . I think that might be the "rudeness" people tend to read (which really is just tenseness from anxiety ) .
All of my life people have been telling me those exact same things. I am socially awkward so I have a very difficult time expressing my emotions and people don't seem to understand it. Because of my face, even my best friend which I've know since kinder garden (now a sophmore) is even scared of me. My mom always calls me mean and hostile because of the lack of expression and deepness of my voice (I'm a girl). The things people say about me makes me feel like I'm a monster and they always treat me like a loose canon because they are terrified of what I might be like when I'm angry
@Lorena27 one time someone at work asked why I was always smiling and I told the person "because I'm aware that I have a resting beeech face so I smile."
Haha, you were being honest. It can become draining though to always focus on looking happy or a certain way right.
This is kinda random but might help someone. I spent most of my life thinking clenching your jaw is normal since it was natural for me. Turns out it's not healthy. My ortho told me I was grinding my teeth & making em move by clenching my teeth. That's why I need braces again :/ I'm working on not clenching my jaw & it actually makes me feel calmer. It;s also helped get rid of headaches caused by grinding my teeth. I finally understand why ppl said I had a resting bitch face. I didn't see anything wrong. Turns out you can relax your face w/o smiling constantly lol. Someone had to have the weird random response lol
I think your post is very relevant, thanks for sharing! I think we can all relate with some form of tension in our face. I remember in the past noticing more tension around my eyes and eyebrows.
Yup. It's annoying, especially when you're sent to guidance at school because you "look worried" or sad.
Ugh I hate when ppl make assumptions. Ironically ppl think I'm happy when I'm sad/anxious cuz I have the weird coping mechanism of smiling to cover it up. & when I'm really in the zone they think I'm angry. Lol if they sent everyone @ college who looked worried to guidance we'd all be there.
Yeah.. Same goes for me..People would ask me what's wrong? Or tell me to smile, or telling me i look depressed i honestly don't listen. I mean i may look angry, Inside im perfectly fine..
