Social Anxiety: Share your Experience Here!
Hello friends!
Social anxiety can make you feel like you're trapped. Suffocating. No place to escape. Nervous. These are just a few emotions and thoughts we can have when living with social anxiety.
For me, when I would go out in public (before corona) I tried to have positive thoughts. I tried to breathe and focus on happy things. The grocery store is the ultimate deal-breaker. That is where I cross the line. I hate the grocery store. But, I don't know why. I have no idea why I have this dreadful hate for the grocery store. This is where food is! (and tbh...food is awesome!) Am I scared to be humiliated in public? What is the worst that can happen? WIll I see someone I know? These are all thoughts that I personally have racing around my small 3-pound brain. That social anxiety immediately tells me what the worst-case scenario is. But in all honesty, the biggest thing I fear every single day is "How will I control it?" "Can I control it?" I a scared that I will always live in fear. That I will never be able to go to the grocery store by myself.
What I have learned while coping with social anxiety, is that not everyone is going to understand you. Not everyone is going to have compassion. Or be kind about it. Not everyone is going to be patient. Or gentle. This is so frustrating to me because I can't help that I have a mental illness. I can't help that some people won't understand how I feel. Or control what they think when I have to run to the bathroom in the middle of grocery shopping to take a deep breath and calm down before I have an anxiety attack.
Recently, I have been writing down in my journal that I keep at my bedside, one thing I am grateful for every day. And today when I wrote in it, I wrote that I was most grateful for 7 Cups. I wrote this because ever since I joined 7 Cups, I have felt so welcomed and so at home. Every person I have chatted with and met has been incredibly nice to me, patient with me, and truly cares. I feel like I can relate to people who actually get what I go through. I will forever be in debt to 7 Cups and all of its support. This platform has changed my life.
7 Cups is an amazing place to share your experience without being judged or criticized. If you are comfortable, I would love to read your experience(s). Feel free to share one experience or all of them down below! Please, don't hesitate to reach out to me through PMs. I want to support and love all of you through your journey with social anxiety.
Remember, you can do this. You are capable of coping. You are an amazing human who deserves support and love!
I love you all! - Jen

My biggest social anxiety feels like such a dumb thing to me - I get actual sweaty palms and heart palpitations talking on the phone to anyone new. If I have to call anywhere new even for such a simple as a doctors appointment it makes me so nervous.
It always takes me a couple of hours of hyping myself up. I hate this about myself :(
My social anxiety is getting worse now. I can't stop thinking about the awkward situations I have dealt with. Being around people scares me the most. Whenever I am in such a situation my mind goes blank and I start shivering. I just can't be my best at the moment.
For some reason the older i get the more my social anxiety escalates, I'm 44 and feel like I should be able to breath now but can't, it's getting to where I don't even want to go to my partners family house because it's just to much and I'm comfortable at home. I'm I the only person who feels like this??
i feel like i do, i think everyone is watching me and that i am going to do something stupid or just not do well in a basic task.

Growing up, I loved being around people and hanging out with friends. Even times when I didn't have friends I naturally made them. Everyone would say how much fun I was to have around or entertaining.
In high school, I still had friends and wasn't afraid to talk to people. I even worked at a Mcdonald's and I was in the band. I was able to be myself even if I was in front of a crowd.
Then in college, it was the first time I experienced depression it was awful but I was able to get through it. Actually, I would say my freshmen year of college was a bit rough for me. My sophomore year was fine. But by my junior year, I had bad roommates and drama with people and I was still struggling with school. I even struggled with professors.
I was in this relationship that really killed my self-esteem. Then after graduating I was at this job that was so mentally exhausting and a lot of people who worked there were so toxic. Actually sort of thankful for the pandemic in the sense that it pushed me to get a new job. Then at that new job, this one guy was trying to get me fired.
I finally have a new job that I fit in but I still struggle with talking to people. I don't have any friends after having so many bad ones.
It's weird for me to see how I live my life so isolated since I grew up being around so many people.
I think my social anxiety is from constant mistreatment from others over the years. I'm even socially anxious sometimes when driving in traffic. I am okay talking to workers because they're just doing a job.
Finding people I relate to is a very hard thing for me to do.

Hi! I believe I have social anxiety, although I am not officially diagnosed. I often feel extremely stressed to do simple things, like answering a phone call or going to the grocery store. At school, I almost have no interactions with my classmates, because I am afraid that if I talk to them, they will judge me negatively. So, I just sit in the classroom all day, studying, or pretending to be studying, just to avoid any conversations. I don’t know if I want to start talking to them, both talking and sitting alone feel uncomfortable. Because if I talk, they will judge what I say and if I sit alone, they will judge me for sitting alone all day. Or that’s just what I think.
Hi I'm experiencing the same situation at highschool I stay at class during break times and study because I have no close friends because of my anxiety
