Bipolar Type 2 Medication Adjustment

TW: hospitalization

Hello, I’m F25, and I am diagnosed with Bipolar Type 2, and many other things. I had a really bad mental breakdown several days ago, to the point where I was scared I would have to go to the mental health hospital. I pushed through the dark thoughts, thanks to my wonderful partner, and I had my psychiatrist appointment today. She prescribed me Lithium to take with my Olanzapine. I’m just scared and I hope that it helps me feel better and stable soon. Anyone have good luck with Lithium?

Hey. I am sorry to hear about the bad mental breakdown that you had. I am glad that you were able to push through the dark thoughts with the help of your partner and that you were able to see your psychiatrist so soon. I understand being scared. These things can be scary. I also share the same hope as you and hope that the new medication can help you feel better and stable soon. I have never taken Lithium myself but I have heard many stories where people say it has helped them. Just keep a regular mood chart while you are taking these medications, so you can see a clear graph of how and where you are at any given moment. This will also allow your psychiatrist to know how much improvement there is.

Thank you for your kind words and support. I’ll make sure to keep a mood journal for sure.

@GalaxyDreamer28 if you have bipolar 2,usually antidepressants are more suitable, lithium can come with alot of side effects, the only problem i had with bi polar 2 with antidepressants was great for years until i experienced mania and i wasn't bi polar 2 anymore, i tried lithium and lamotrigine,i ended up taking quetipine, little side effects, do your research and take what you're comfortable with,i found that we are pretty much guiney pigs when it comes to pills

I’ve tried antidepressants, they make me manic, unfortunately. The lithium seems to be helping me so far, I’m just worried about the side effects. Hopefully I won’t be on Lithium for an extended period of time. It sucks that we have to be guinea pigs 😭 I wish all the medications would work for everyone

@GalaxyDreamer28 lithium came out in the 50s and still considered the gold standard, shows how much more they know then 75 years ago, not much lol
