How do you feel about your job?

Anyone here loves their job but hates the stress/work environment? Or hates the job, but enjoys the company of your coworkers?

I feel mixed-feelings about my job.

I thought maybe I was finally starting to like it, but it's too much stress because of how short-staffed we are as well as not exactly... The most efficient way to do certain things(I'm trying to come up with easier ways for processes whenever I can)... Also, had some issues prior with some coworkers. I don't hate them, it's just with some, it's difficult to work with them. They seem nice outside of work, but during work, they're all a bit cranky and snap at each other.

I currently work in finances. I like doing numbers (as long as I have the formulas lol), but I'm getting fatigued staring at the screen for hours after calculating...

I thought I would be happy once I'm able to go permanent full-time, but currently, I am part-time temp.

Debating on applying for a different position, which will be a legal admin in the company, or if stick around until I find something I like better...

I don't plan on staying in this city/state after a year so maybe I'll commit to the job for just a year and leave after. It will be a nicer pay rate than what I currently have once I'm permanent. It'll be convenient too for now based on location and will help me better support the little one (I'm a solo parent, the other parent is not involved and doesn't pay child support).

The only issues really is that the job is near where my abusive ex-fiancé lives who nearly made me unalive. The stress is also troublesome and... The hours... we'll see. I have to run errands and pick up little one at a certain time, and without a car it can be difficult...I have to get a new car, my current one has been done for close to a year now...

@ImpudentIncognito God bless you ❤I don't work I never have. So I'm not sure I understand much about this topic. So I'm just gonna give you a giant tiny hug ❤❤

@Tinywhisper11 Aww, thank you Tiny! 💖✨ I wish I could pursue hobbies instead of ending up in meaningless jobs...but the hobbies I have aren't lucrative. I can't survive on them.

Though, tbh, you're not missing out on much when it comes to working. 😅 It's just a means of survival, and not really anything else for most people.

@ImpudentIncognito

I used to really like my job.  Politics, (politics drives my job and how we do things),staff and staffing are the main reason I'm not so in love with it anymore and probably the reason I have bouts with burnout. Its all about the people for me.

The Ex thing....I totally understand....I tried to stay in the area where my first wife was for the sake of the kids.....she made it real hard for me to have my own life there after the divorce, and as hard as it was for me to leave my kids there with her, I had to move 800 miles away back home for my own emotional well being.  It was extremely hard at first, but things worked out in the long run.

I am sending good vibes your way.

@CyclingThroughLife Yeah, exactly. I liked the job, but similar to you, the politics, short-staff(meaning working harder) and dealing with certain staff members is exhausting. I guess youre right tbh. Even when I had *** jobs in the past, the people is what either made it better or worse... I'm going to look into finding a different job soon.

About my ex fiancé...

I only stayed in this city really to allow the little one to see his father, but my ex no longer wants to co-parent unless I get back in a relationship with him, which I never will in a million years...so he ditched our son pretty much because of it. I gave my ex multiple chances in the past and even went to couple's counseling, but his alcohol addiction and abuse was too much. When he got sober, I allowed him to see son, but again, he only wanted to see son if I decided to get in a relationship with ex, but I don't want to.

I have a loving partner now though, so I'm not so worried about my son having a healthy father figure. My son and my partner get along really well too, which is nice! (My son is still young, around preschool age).

Also, I don't blame you for moving. You had to do what you had to do. Hopefully, moving away from there helped your well-being, and I hope you're still able to see your children. Relationships can be difficult, and it's harder with children are involved. People don't realize a lot of things we do as single or solo parents.

I plan on moving out of this city soon, since I really have no ties here. Just waiting for the lease to end by next fall and... I will figure out where to go with partner (he lives 2hrs away from me, but always makes the effort to come see me or at least talk on the phone daily). Or I might use my tax money next year, drop it ALL on my rent (because breaking the lease is had on record) and move sooner depending on a new job that I may end up with.

Idealistically, would love to just start my own business or freelance. I'm burnt out from regular jobs...

I hope all is well for you too!

Yes, definitely mixed feelings here. I completed a Certificate Program for my previous job title. Loved the work, called it a career I won't mind doing until retirement. Excited with work everyday and felt my energy came from the adrenaline rush.

Then, 3 years ago, I changed positions. Still love my work, but changes in staff on my team made the atmosphere more on the edge. When staff amongst my team have different standards to doing "good work" and to work with non-perfectionists, it drains a lot of my energy. I still love my work, the other people I work with (aside from teammates), but it's no longer something I'll be doing until retirement. Especially when I don't stand a chance in getting a permanent position anytime soon. Can't stay forever with no medical insurance included.

In the midst of looking into a change of career.

@Jaeteuk Oof, I completely relate to that! I'm a part-time temp agent, my benefits are... Minimal. I think the job itself is OK (I'm in the finance field for the moment), but hate how I'm tossed around doing multiple positions, then getting scolded for not getting certain things done... I can only be at so many places at once.

I had a position switch too, and it kind of bites. I thought it would be better, but it's unorganized and frustrating. I try to fix the problems, but it doesn't seem fair.

I thought I wanted to stay at this job, because once permanent, they have a LOT of amazing benefits, but I think it's like that because of the stress from the job. It really depends on who your boss or team is too... I'm in a small, understaffed team (which is why I have to cover certain positions within the finance team).

I think I'll look somewhere else, the benefits probably aren't worth it, or I can find it somewhere else. I want to go back to working remotely again, but I can't with this position...

I'm worried about getting my contract terminated, my son has been sick for a week and same with me, so I haven't been working... I'm missing out on a whole paycheck(I work weekly).

My partner said he'll support me, but I want to be able to support myself and son too...

Anyhow, I hope you find what you're looking for btw!

I'm a casual at local hospital, meaning not a permanent staff yet. So, no benefits whatsoever.. so no medical insurance, no paid sick leaves, no paid vacations. I only came into this Healthcare field because I was introduced into the work, and they say with 25 years of full-time, our pension when we retire will be enough for our retirement life. But, 5 years into the Hospital, I'm still a casual worker. As a casual worker, the hours add up very slowly, so even when there are full-time positions available, I don't qualify. As hiring is based on seniority hours. 7000 hours doesn't stand a chance against someone with 20,000+ hours.

It looks like we're both facing the same problems with work! I find my colleagues are very inconsiderate people, and they do the minimal tasks that their position requires them to do. Then turns a blind eye to everything else. All the extra tasks I do, it's not like they're part of my job description list either, but I just do it because I see it has to be done. Then, when something is missed or that I didn't get a chance to do, I get in trouble the next day and those colleagues will complain to me about the lack of work I'm doing. Well, if they were kind enough to help with shared tasks, then things like this wouldn't happen!

I hope both you and your son recover quickly. We always want to be able to provide for ourselves and our loved ones, without the help from others (partner included). Its good your partner offered the support, accept it during your tough times. Takes the weight off your shoulders for a bit, until you can get back on track.

@Jaeteuk Hey, how have you been doing? How's work? I barely got over being sick maybe on Monday/Tuesday. Since I was off for an entire week, my boss messaged me and said he needed to talk to me about my temp contract in office. He also took away my new position, so it sounds like he is most likely going to terminate me soon... So currently looking for new jobs.

To be honest, I feel slightly relieved. This job was stressing me out, and I'm not fond of any of the coworkers/management there. The only thing that bites is the job search, but I think it will be worth it.

Luckily (if needed), I can lean on my partner for support, but I'm going to try not to do that too much. I want to find a job that is satisfying and worth it. I prefer a job that I can work on my own with very little supervision(and minimal condescending remarks lol).

At the moment, I need to fix my resume and possibly rewrite my cover letter template.

Anyhow, hope everything is going well for you!

Thanks for checking in with me! I'm glad you're feeling better now. That problematic colleague actually spoke to me twice yesterday. I was surprised. The first time was to tell me that she was busy and couldn't do the testing of a machine we have that was out of service and was fixed because she had been busy all morning (my shift starts at noon). The second time, was because of the testing the equipment is hot, so she said to me she's calling for a small table so I have a surface to put the item on.

I had been so tired physically.. the past few weeks, even working a noon shift, I still woke up around 6am, and get to the Hospital by 7:30am latest.. because parking is horrible here. Any shift that starts after 9am, you will not be able to find parking. So, I've been waking up earlier, to ensure I have a parking spot. Earlier, after parking my car, I walked to the library (only a 5-10mins walk away). They open at 9am, so I'll basically sit in my car until 8:45am, drop off my dinner in the lunch room, then walk to the library. Then leave at 11am, get back to my car to grab my bags then off to the changeroom.

In the library I've been taking notes on how to write Cover Letters and Resumé. So, I spent a good week of mornings taking notes there. Then, last week, I wrote on paper a draft for both. The past weekend, I had typed it out on my computer. This week, because the weather is getting cold in the mornings, rather than going to the library, I've just been sitting in our cafeteria. Writing up more drafts of the Cover Letter and Resumé.

I actually am aiming to send it out earlier next year. There is a company I've been eyeing for a long time. And with the possible changes at work in the next two years, 3 people retiring, the staff the will join the team, if it's who I think will get the positions, is another problematic ex-colleague. Someone who's been holding a grudge against me for the past 2 years. So, for the sake of my mental health, if my Manager doesn't allow me to work shifts that cover their vacation days only (that way, I don't have to work shifts where we have hours overlapping), then I'll have to quit. The first person to retire will be gone by next July. She's taking all her vacation before her final day, so she's on vacation May and June. Then, 2 other colleagues will be retiring on their birthdays.. or at least, try to retire by then. It seems with Healthcare, no matter when was the person's start date, when they retire, their final days are always during the summer.

But, I'm excited for the possible career change. I'm going to tweak my Cover Letter and Resumé over the weekend and for the next 2 weeks. I finally get a break from work. For the next 2 weeks, I'm only working the Mondays. I've made some plans for next week already though. Finally going in for some dental work, need to get some fillings done. And I'll also be going on coffee dates with my mum. Basically to update her on my plans for the near future because of the changes that will be happening at work.

Hi @ImpudentIncognito, I am currently in a job that I pretty much hate, but I absolutely love my boss and coworkers. Easily the best boss I've ever worked for, he's very patient and understanding. I'm very open with him about my mental health struggles and he is always compassionate and tells me to take whatever time I need to get myself right. I haven't gone as far as telling him that I think I hate the job.

I feel like I've just built up this resentment for work in general over the last several years. I've had a lot of family pass away lately, with myom being most recent this past July. Every time someone passes I lose a bit more of my will to keep working. I feel like work just take me away from life and that I can't enjoy life while working. I wake up most Mondays and cry for the better part of the morning. As the week goes on things seem to get more bearable. Then the weekend comes and I get to do things I actually enjoy and the cycle starts over again come Monday morning.

Not really sure how much longer I can keep going through these cycles, it is really starting to wear me down mentally and physically. My wife tries to be supportive but just says the wrong things. I feel like I'm trapped and am going to work until the day I die.

@VintageDougers Sorry to hear about your mother's passing, my condolences. It's good to hear though that you have support from your boss and from your wife.

If money did not matter, what would you ideally like to do as a career or for fun?

Thanks @ImpudentIncognito. If money weren't a factor I guess I'd probably enjoy working in the videogame industry somehow. I'm no programmer but maybe testing games or something I don't know.

Trying to motivate myself to get online and start working today. We had a long weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday here and going back after an extended break is always so hard.

@VintageDougers Testing videogames sounds fun! I went to school for computer engineering, and part of the reason I wanted to study it was due to my interest in videogames and learning how things work from inside and out.

Honestly, I can relate to that dreadful feeling of having to go back to work... We also had a long Thanksgiving weekend and I'm pretty sure my boss is going to terminate my temp contract here soon, because both the little one and myself were sick for an entire week (I'm a solo parent, so I don't have a choice but to call off work if little one is sick anyways). My boss told me before I left for break how he suddenly wanted to talk to me about the contract and was rather brash about some projects I worked on, voicing his irritation and disappointment...

I'm tired of my boss pretty much setting me up to fail. *** have me work one position and focus solely on that with incomplete training, then complain that I didn't finish another project that he SPECIFICALLY told me to "not worry about, it's not a priority, don't do it", just to chastise me and how I didn't complete the project...

It drives me insane.

But anyways, I feel somewhat... Relieved. I applied for multiple jobs like a day or two ago and got an answer back from one of them already. I plan on switching out of the finance field, as it's boring to me and unnecessarily stressful with the deadlines.

I am anxious about going into work but at the same time, relieved. It's weird haha. I can't wait to leave this job!

@ImpudentIncognito that definitely sounds like a stressful work situation, but I'm glad to hear you've got some other prospects on the horizon.

I try to remind myself of how good I have it with my current boss. He's so compassionate and understanding, is always supportive and just honesty a good friend. Problem is that when it boils down to it I just don't care about the job or the company. I ask myself if I'd really actually care about any job, and think probably not. I feel like I've gotten to a point in life where there's just nothing more to aspire for. I've got a great wife, a nice little house, two cats and a good paying job. We don't plan on having kids, so what more is there? I just want to wind down my life and enjoy what's left of it, but feel like work doesn't allow me to do that.

Ok starting to cry again so gonna wrap this up. Thanks for listening, I hope things work out for you with your new job prospect.

I dislike my job, my profession, and many of my colleagues. Some of that is them and some of it is me. I'm sort of sleepwalking through my career, but I won't be able to do that for much longer.

Part of what I struggle with is the meaning of work/career. I have to get past a need for my work to matter (in terms of a greater good)

@hematite43 I can relate to that. I'm pretty sure my contract is ending soon due to me being super sick for a week and not coming into work. My boss is not very understanding at all it turns out....

I too feel lost sometimes when it comes to career/work... It feels like my work doesn't really amount to anything a lot of the time, and I want to work somewhere more meaningful to me...

I hope you end up finding a job that has a healthy environment and non-toxic coworkers/bosses!
