  1. We would provide you with a situational prompt.

  2. You would reply to this post with a creative ending of your own in response to the situation given to you.

Prompt:

Sheryl and her dog Cashew were going for their morning walk at the nearby dog park. Every morning it brought Sheryl joy to spend time with her precious dog and to see Cashew interact with other local dogs. They walked past benches, flower beds, and eventually a small pond where Sheryl decided to take a rest.

Suddenly, another dog runs up to Cashew and lets out a strange bark that Sheryl had never heard a dog make before! Surprisingly, Cashew makes the same bark in return as if a secret language had been activated between the two dogs…

Sheryl is horrified at her new discovery. She had no idea what it was so she ran toward Cashew and asked him what he had said. What she got instead was a high-pitched bark similar to what a chimp or a gorilla might make. Was it because of his early age that he was imitating the sounds of a human?

What were they doing? What was going on? Was the dog with his human parent somehow controlled by the voice in his head? And what if Sheryl was? Was there anyone out there to explain it to her? Soon enough, the other dog's owner came along.

She explains that it is not unusual for her dog to start barking in response to something he sees outside. So he only barks at whatever he perceives to be there – no meaning behind the sound, no control by a voice in the head.

The chimp-monkey origin of human speech was initially a scientific mystery that was initially thought to be a disorder of the human brain. Now with the discovery of a chimpanzee called Maeve that was also born with a semi-human-like voice, we might just have to begin to reconsider what human speech and language truly are. Sheryl was amazed to hear this. She immediately ran towards Cashew, picked him up, and stopped going outside... Never to be seen again.

Sheryl was staring at her dog. Surely she couldn't have just imagined that? It almost sounded like a high pitched bark put through an echo tube through static. Everything else had been sounding normal, so it couldn't be her hearing, could it?

Suddenly her dog put it's head down on the ground and seemed to be trying to rub its eyes with its paws and whimpering, though the whimpers sounded like they were coming through static too.

"Cash! What's wrong baby!?" She started to go up to her dog, when the other one moved to stand in the way.

She looked into its eyes, almost spellbound somehow, and then it let out another strange bark. This time it made her throat tickle and a noise came out that sounded like obstructed static. It felt like her head was slightly pulsating, and her vision started to cloud up. The spun, trying to walk, and it was dizzifying... In front of her was the water.

In some sort of instinct she purposely stumbled forward and let herself fall in the water, and instantly, she started feeling normal again. After a moment, she came back up, and her eyes adjusted. The other dog was gone, and Cashew looked confused.

"Come on Cashew, let's get out of here," she said as she sloshed out of the water and grabbed her dog's leash. Her voice was normal again.

Starting to walk back the way she came, she wondered if she imagined it all, and suddenly Cashew started pulling her toward the pond where a duck stood, feathers ruffled.

Then Cashew barked at the duck... It was the strange bark again, and the duck started wailing the same noise...

Could this some sort of Neuroscience or organic based virus?

I think you're on the right track. I hadn't fully defined it, I just let my mind run with it. Actually, what I really hadn't defined to myself is why being in the water helped.

@Torean I always look forward to your creativity with these prompts and they're always enjoyable each week 😌 It sounds like Cashew has some connections to the water, as does Sheryl seeing how it helped her feel normal after a while. Thank you for participating!

Cashew turns her head sideways bewildered, “excuse me?” Cashew repeated. ”Is that your human?” the other dog stated confidently. “By the way, you come here often don’t you?” Cashew’s head tilts the other way. “I smelled you all up and down this trail.” Incessantly the other dog stated while pacing around cashew. Poking and probing with his nose.

Sheryl looked around the park for who owns this dog. And she found no one. Sheryl looked concern.

Impulsively the other dog continued “You smell nice. You have someone clean you? You must be rich? Hey, you haven’t answered my question, is that your human? Your human looks funny. Isn’t it funny humans don’t have tails? You will be back tomorrow, same time. You have nice fur! I like your fur. Your human brushes you, doesn’t it?” The other dog turned left for no apparent reason. All most mid-sentence. Cashew turned and looked at Sheryl, her human.

Sheryl was confused and boarder lined annoyed. Sheryl reached down protectively to Cashew. Her dog. “How strange.” Sheryl said to Cashew. Cashew leaned into Sheryl like she understood what Sheryl was saying. “It’s ok Mommy is here.” Cashew nosed Sheryl’s hand and leaned against Sheryl’s leg.

Cashew thought to herself as she stepped into her human “That impulsive dog has you all distraught. Don’t worry human. I am here.” Cashew rubbed up against her human’s leg and nosed the human’s hand to remind it she will take care of everything. Cashew continued to think “Where did that dog come from? Does that dog have a human? That dog did smell like familiar. I smelled it near that check-in spot.”

The next day, Sheryl followed through her morning routine. Then she picked up Cashew’s leash which got Cashew’s attention. Cashew came running in, tail in full swing. She placed, waiting patiently as Sheryl hooked up the leash to go on their morning walk. Today was a wonderful day. Light breeze, partially sunny, and temperature was perfect for a walk to prep for the day.

Sheryl cleared the corner with Cashew at her side. Sheryl thinking to herself “Cashew right at myside. She is such a good dog. Such a blessing to have her in my life.” They came up on this pole at the entrance of the dog park. And it looks like every dog ever has mark it. Then Cashew strangely pulled to the pole. She has not done this before and then let out that strange bark again.

Cashew announced “I knew it! I smelled you before! I got you!” with sternness.

Sheryl called to Cashew “Girl! With me. Heel.” Sheryl calmly but firmly commanded, which Cashew fluidly obeyed. Sheryl proudly beamed at Cashew and said “Good Girl, Good Girl!”

Cashew finished announcing, then looked at her human. After Cashew seeing her human beaming, she proudly leading her human, Her Human, into the park. She sniffs the air and the ground. Taking stock as to who is in the park, who’s single, and who isn’t. Almost like she was scrolling through Social Media for the area. What Cashew didn’t understand, why did the other humans need to hit her in the head? It is like my human meets someone. The other human looks at me and then next I have head-ache. She grumbled to herself “stupid humans, going to have to train them all I guess.”

Sheryl acknowledging and stopping at various friends and neighbors as she made her way to the bench they stop at. Showing off Cashew, her beautiful dog. Almost like Cashew was her daughter. Proud Momma, she was portraying. Strolling through the park and thinking to herself “What a wonderful morning.” Then it happened … That strange bark and dog.

“Told you, you would be here.” The annoying other dog stated. Cashew wasn’t amused. “I see you brought that funny looking no tailed human again. That human is yours isn’t it?” Pressed the other dog continued. “Isn’t it. It is your human. Admit it.” Cashew turned, ignoring the other dog. Hoping and willing it to go away. Cashew slowly pulled on the leash, urging her human on. “Why you not answer? Do you not understand?” The other dog mocked. It was getting under Cashew’s collar now. She quickly turned and snapped “What do you want from me, BROTHER!”

Sheryl startled and little afraid now. Sheryl has never seen her precious little dog act like this. “Baby girl. What has gotten in you?!” Sheryl spattered confuse, concerned, and afraid.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now you would think Cashew would be happy to see her brother? Why would Cashew’s brother mock her?

And Sheryl has no clue of this whole other world, could we be miss understanding the world of Dog?

@Barltik2065 Hi there 😊 My favorite thing about your responses are that they're always unpredictable which makes them even more entertaining. In this prompt I really enjoy the conversation you made the dogs have about their funny looking humans xD But the brother part, very nice plot twist!
