What is Loneliness?

Over the years I have been active here, I found that loneliness is one of the most common issues.

One in 10 adults feel lonely according to studies conducted in different countries. That's quite massive, isn't it? Seems like loneliness has become the new common cold.

Somehow, it is intriguing how so many people are lonely at more or less the same time at the same place (here on earth). What have we done wrong? I'm interested to understand better.

  1. What is loneliness in your own words?
  2. Where do you feel the pain in your body whenever loneliness hits?
  3. In order to ease the pain, what do you need? Or what do you think would be helpful?
  4. How do you use 7 Cups to help and to heal?

@ouiCherie

I define loneliness as not being understood. Having to tackle every single hardship on our own could be a sign of strength; however, there are times when we need someone to comfort us and tell us it is okay to fail or cry. Hearing these phrases from anyone in our circle can calm us and helps us move forward stronger than before.

  1. What is loneliness in your own words?
Being alone when I don't want to be, but I do find contentment being alone. Depends on what I'm going through.
  2. Where do you feel the pain in your body whenever loneliness hits?
Probably my stomach, or maybe a slight headache.
  3. In order to ease the pain, what do you need? Or what do you think would be helpful?
Get out of the house. Take a walk. Go shopping. Go pet the dog. Go take pictures.
  4. How do you use 7 Cups to help and to heal?
One thing I'm finding joy in here is sharing my creativity. It feels good to get positive feedback. I found that the 'Huddle' I participated in was very helpful in making a difficult decision. Feels good to get others input/opinions/insight.

  1. What is loneliness in your own words? Being by yourself, feeling isolated, wanting/needing companionship, and being unable to get it.
  2. Where do you feel the pain in your body whenever loneliness hits? My heart and my stomach
  3. In order to ease the pain, what do you need? Or what do you think would be helpful? It would be great to have somebody to be with, to do things with, especially someone who understood me and what I've been through.
  4. How do you use 7 Cups to help and to heal? I haven't figured out how to do much here beyond posting comments to these questions and playing word games. I'd like to do more, but don't know how.

Loneliness = lack of communicating something of importance

I communicate whatever is important when I feel lonely, like there's no one around to listen or care... and it turns out there are always people around to listen and that can/will/do care! Online, in my phone, in my networks, in my past, in my present, on this 7 cups site, in twitter, on forums, in instagram, musicians I haven't greeted in a while, on language learning apps like HelloTalk and Tandem and iTalki - someone always wants to talk/listen somewhere ;)

The big part of loneliness is asking myself "what is important right now that I feel the need to communicate?" That interrupts the loneliness feeling and gets my mind working on a task that eventually makes the feeling fade/disappear pretty much every time.

Sometimes the communication is to myself, in my journal or out loud on walk! Doesn't really matter who I am communicating to, as long as they are receptive and kind, and I am definitely receptive to hear my own communication!

Loneliness in my own words.... it's a heavy presence. Looming and ominous. It's standing in the middle of no where with nothing and no-one for miles. You could scream yourself hoarse but no-one hears. It's a constant free fall with nothing to slow you down or soften the landing. It's being lost in the dark with nothing to guide you.

It hits the head first and seeps down to my throat where all the words are stuck. From there it makes its way to my heart which does its job and circulates it everywhere and I'm left with a heavy restless feeling. A niggling itch with no way to scratch it.

Companionship. People who truly understand and stand with me on the good days but stand closer on the bad days. To not have what is felt challenged or questioned or made to feel small because the feeling is there.

Reaching out to others here. Helping them feel seen and heard helps me feel seen and heard and brings a sense purpose and meaning to life.
