What is Loneliness?
Over the years I have been active here, I found that loneliness is one of the most common issues.
One in 10 adults feel lonely according to studies conducted in different countries. That's quite massive, isn't it? Seems like loneliness has become the new common cold.
Somehow, it is intriguing how so many people are lonely at more or less the same time at the same place (here on earth). What have we done wrong? I'm interested to understand better.

@ouiCherie Loneliness for me would be a fear that no one supports me, or no one is on my side.
The pain is mostly in my heart. The heaviness I feel when I am scared or alone
For me to release that pain would be talking to someone I trust and who can calm me down in that difficult situation.
Listening is the best help I would ever need, and I intend to provide it to others as well. Talking to people here also helps me release my pain.

Great answers! The last part is the most wonderful: "Listening is the best help I would ever need, and I intend to provide it to others as well."
Smart and compassionate. Thank you, Buddy!
I'm listening and you are loved!
Loneliness is an empty lifeless body to me. It's been a while since I have been lonely.
There is no pain, just a hallow shell.
I did spiritual meditation with my religion and relationships with people. Taking naps and having fun.
I heal by dealing with family drama, anxiety, addiction, and so on.
For me, loneliness is a sadness. An emptyness. A fear.
I feel loneliness in my brain but mostly in my heart.
Participating in an activity that promotes confidence, being outdoors or finishing a task that has clear before/after potential such as painting a room, mowing the lawn, cleaning the house, getting a manicure etc helps ease the pain of loneliness.
I've just started 7 cups but taking the time to answeri questions like these helps me slow down and be thoughtful about my feelings.
@ouiCherie
Mhmm. This is a really good post, the points mentioned are spot on.
Although I haven't been here for years, I'm also a teen so I don't know if it's more common in the adult side, but in this side, loneliness is fairly common!
It's heartbreaking how many people feel alone in their experience, pain, suffering, when the fact that there are so many others are going through the same experience.
1. What is loneliness in your own words?
I see loneliness as an unwanted feeling of being alone and lacking of company, which I think is pretty natural, as our body is reacting to being alone by telling us that there's something wrong. I believe that this feeling can even come up if we were surrounded with people.
When my mom lost her brother, she used to say that she's feeling super lonely. Even though, everyone she knew was there to be supportive of her. I think in that situation she was feeling alone without her brother, not because she's not having people around her. So loneliness is a very complex feeling, it depends on a lot of different aspects.
2. Where do you feel the pain in your body whenever loneliness hits?
I believe it's an emotional pain, it's like a heavy chest and a busy mind.
3. In order to ease the pain, what do you need? Or what do you think would be helpful?
I usually try to stay around those who love and understand me. Sometimes I tell my therapist and we talk things through, really helpful.
4. How do you use 7 Cups to help and to heal?
Lots of people who are using 7Cups are having issues. They might be struggling/ have struggled/ or even struggled in their past.

- What is loneliness in your own words? Loneliness happens to me when i have people around it is a sense of being unheard and unnoticed and ignored ...... being by myself i am only lonely after a longer time missing a connection .... i find the loneliness with people near is worse
- Where do you feel the pain in your body whenever loneliness hits? just an empty feeling a feeling of wanting to scream "seriously am i invisible"
- In order to ease the pain, what do you need? Or what do you think would be helpful? I daydream about being involved or nap or come online in various forums and talk to other people
- How do you use 7 Cups to help and to heal? i find this site a way to help me through by seeing i am not alone and many people i answer their posts to try to help others and even seeing others who have it much worse puts my sadness in perspective.
To me, loneliness is the feeling of emptiness that comes from not having people to share your life with. Whether itβs the successes or the failures, you realize thereβs no one around you feel comfortable telling about it. Even if people are physically there, they donβt feel like theyβre close enough to tell about these things. Maybe they wouldnβt care. Or even get annoyed. So everything just gets kept inside.
I think people need a witness to their lives. Someone who is there and actually means it when they ask βHowβs it going?β We need to share whatβs going on with us to someone and Iβm hoping 7cups can be that for me.
Loneliness is my dearest old friend πͺ,
When nobody wanted to be my friend π, not even my own shadow in the darkness of sorrowful life.
People who accept loneliness are happier than those who are alienated after being embraced and loved.
Don't just hate Lonely people π, help them to realise that they are secured from deception and fake friends.
Everybody is welcome to join my solitude of loneliness to embrace each other and help to live a better life.

Such a deep topic to talk about. I am sure so many people will be answering the 4 questions you've asked. If I may, I'd like to share my personal perspective about the unasked question - "it is intriguing how so many people are lonely at more or less the same time at the same place (here on earth). What have we done wrong?"
I'm a 90's kid and remember quite clearly how life was before the internet and social media. We had personal interactions, not all positive even, but real and genuine. When someone felt something, they showed it. It was cool to have emotions and show it without being afraid of being judged by the entire world for being silly or wrong. What happened between friends remained between friends. It gave everyone a chance to have it out, and make up or move on. There was no pressure to look or be perfect in any sense of the word. I sincerely cannot remember a single person from my generation who hasn't had very many bad hair days; in fact if someone turned up looking awesome, everyone wanted to know what the special occasion was! We were all imperfect, emotional, learning curves trying to muddle along in life, holding on to the buddies we made along the way. Buddies who had seen us at our worst, and still stuck around because there weren't 7 billion people in the neighbourhood to choose playmates from; there were just the ones that you can physically reach when you want to play! You tried your best not to upset or hurt those few buddies because you'd want them to want to play with you too!! Of course upsets do happen and it was in all parties' interest to sort it out amicably and just get back to playing again; there was no internet to distract us from the fact that a buddy is upset. Today's world is very different and it is sad to see that being e-connected to billions of people hasn't actually brought people any closer in the sense which matters. I hope your search for the answers finds a way to make that happen! Much luck and love to you!
@0m thank you for saying what I would have liked to.. we never had phones apart from one in the house and always told to get off it as parents βwaiting for a callβ, lol that never really came.. to say I will be home before dark, and then find our friends or adventures that day.. it was a much easier time for myself, and love thinking of the days playing with kids in the street, or at a park didnβt know them and by the end of the day, after playing in the river, beach or game of whatever.. new friends made..
i remember having sad days for a reason then.. now it seems as if we have lost the ability to allow for imperfections.. I also missed most of the social media boom as travelling and running a muck.. yet still see the destruction it can cause to young minds.. very lucky I think, missed that boat.. so many young and older compares to others, worried about so much.. not that I can talk, living away from the world in the bush with the puppies..
anywhoooo enough from me, thanks again for your words.. they made me think of better times, well different times at least.. hope you have a funtastic day or night πΎβοΈπππΆπ¦πΊπ π¦π€ β€οΈβπ©Ήπ€·πΌββοΈ
@Dogsaregreat44
Thanks for sharing and I'm glad the words brought a smile to your day with the memories!
Coincidentally I also missed the social media boat; makes me wonder if it's more of our generation that might have just opted to skip it...
P.S. - Yes, the "waiting for a call" call never came haha that one made me laugh.
Wish you many many happy times with the puppies!!
Hi @0m
Yes, it's somehow a deep topic. I'm 70% introverted at heart, I enjoy deep talk lol (people in life often mistaken me as an extrovert xD)
I'm glad you made a point on that question π very wise thought. Digitalisation can be our down fall or our muse and it's unstoppable.
You made a great point there. Showing an appropriate amount of emotions and vulnerability as well as try to be observant with another person's feelings build connection. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Om π€ππ»

- How do you use 7 Cups to help and to heal? - as a listener, i use 7 Cups to be there for members and give them emotional and wellness support.
Loneliness to me is when I have to face struggles by myself. With no one to share my feelings with or to have someone discuss it with me. Loneliness is also the lack of friends I have and feeling like I'm fighting the world alone, with nobody standing beside/behind me to cheer me on.
The most painful time with loneliness, is when I'm struggling with depression. That's when it hits the hardest, my heart will suddenly feel empty or like a bottomless pit.
It would be helpful if I have at least one best friend. Someone who can be there with me to share all moments of my life, the good AND the bad.
As with 7 Cups, it does help a have a few good listeners. So when I need to vent or want to seek a different perspective in a situation, they are there to do so~
