Australia! They have so many weird names for things! Footy (Australian football), sickie (sick leave), U-ie (U-turn), Maccas (McDonald's), servo (service station), bottle-o (liquor store), drop bear (koala), bluey (Pacific man 'o war / bluebottle)... It really is like a different dialect sometimes!
@SevenSolstice Just a note that we don't call koalas drop bears! Drop bears are a fictional 'evil koala' coined to trick tourists (people say they drop from trees and attack you 
). Koalas are still called koalas!
Another few like this are trackies/tracky dacks (tracksuit pants), coldie (beer), vego (vegetarian), woop woop (middle of nowhere)

I recently learned that the majority of their (very busy) firefighters are actually volunteers who do the job out of the goodness of their hearts.

Yep, most of them are volunteers! The government has recently said the firefighters will get 2 weeks paid leave from their jobs I think. Not much for the extraordinary work they're doing, but it's a start!
