Poems about depression 💜

Hello everyone 💙

I think many of us who experience depression find comfort in reading or in writing 💜 especially poetry. So recently I’ve been thinking it would be nice to create a space where we can share poems related to depression and loneliness 💙

Feel free to share your own poems or poems you read somewhere else 💜

@LoveMyMoonflowers aww yes the words are so hard hitting. I love this thing about poems, quotes, books etc any art in general, Niibuddy, someone always has a way of expresssing how we feel too and it is another kind reminder that we aren't as alone as we feel. Someone has been there, they've gathered the courage to share about it too, and we find some solace in their words, because they put on paper what we sometimes struggle to acknowledge and I'm just grateful for this aspect of being a hooman~ connecting with people without even knowing them, a lot of times. *huggles back tightt* 🤗❤

@Sunisshiningandsoareyou

sooo well said, sunnie bean! 💙 i completely agree with everything you’ve written here 💜

being a human can be tough 🥲 with life throwing things at us all the time. we’re broken and we feel we are alone. sometimes we feel it so strongly. but there’s always someone out there, someone who feels the way we do 💜 and art is like a way… it connects one heart to another 💙 no matter how far away the other person is. it hurts so much when we are broken alone, but it’s beautiful when we heal together 💜

personally art also reminds me that every life, every story is needed. some people don’t realise how precious they truly are, they don’t realise that their story and what they have to say could mean the world to someone else. if they had the courage to share it, like you said 💙

I think me found this quote from the wonderful Sunnie forum 💜 hehe. it’s so beautiful 💙

There are three books by her in that link I gave you.

She had severe depression at some point in her life: https://youtu.be/3Psf3UQi_0Q

The poem "Depression doesn't knock", quoted by @Sunisshiningandsoareyou at the top of this thread here:  https://www.7cups.com/forum/depression/General_2427/Poemsaboutdepression_317035/?post=3404907  is also hers. Here is she reciting a bit of it: https://youtu.be/SndrCY3m67Q

Depression is one of the main topics of her poetry.

I wrote this many years ago.  I thought of it as a song:

“I Wonder If You Know/Chilled to the Bone”

I believed that intuition told a woman everything

She could tell if a man’s love was true

I thought you could look into my heart

And see the love I had for you

But then the way I heard you say

You thought that I should go

And with the way you turned away

I wonder if you know

Caught in the Storm

Standing all alone

Soaked to the skin

And chilled to the bone

I have a songtext/poem thing, I find typical for depression, hope and fear:

Is Your Love in Vain?

WRITTEN BY: BOB DYLAN
Do you love me, or are you just extending goodwill?
Do you need me half as bad as you say, or are you just feeling guilt?
I’ve been burned before and I know the score
So you won’t hear me complain
Will I be able to count on you
Or is your love in vain?

Are you so fast that you cannot see that I must have solitude?
When I am in the darkness, why do you intrude?
Do you know my world, do you know my kind
Or must I explain?
Will you let me be myself
Or is your love in vain?

Well I’ve been to the mountain and I’ve been in the wind
I’ve been in and out of happiness
I have dined with kings, I’ve been offered wings
And I’ve never been too impressed

All right, I’ll take a chance, I will fall in love with you
If I’m a fool you can have the night, you can have the morning too
Can you cook and sew, make flowers grow
Do you understand my pain?
Are you willing to risk it all
Or is your love in vain?

I wish I could take the colours from a rainbow

and place them into your heart

so you would remember what beautiful feels like

and know there is hope in the dark.

@LoveMyMoonflowers

I wrote this, shortly after inheriting my dad's house when he passed.  He let everything go, so it was a mess everywhere in the house, I didn't have anyone to stay there with me or help me with it at the time, and I was sleeping in his old bedroom.  It was the one room that was cleared out of junk, with the exception of one of his gargoyles that happened to have holes instead of eyes.

The Gargoyle With No Eyes

I sink down to my room,
As soon as my soul is thicker than air.
It’s very, very dark in here,
Watched over by the gargoyle with no eyes.

Surrounded by void,
Wondering what’s outside the door.
All of this possibility,
And not one speck of this blackness showed me any love.

No love,
I look longingly at the door,
But that part of me is closed off…
That part of everything  is closed off…

The eyeholes full of possibility,
They see nothing.
They wouldn’t need to see anything but me here.
And it doesn’t matter, since it knows me so well.

Never gonna be able to build a home out of this,
I’ll never build any place with a shred of innocence.
I’ll never build anything but a place for this door to go,
But… that part of me is closed off…

I guess I can’t manifest,
I just need to keep sinking.
Secret cupboards in the floor,
At least my gargoyle knows where I am.

Empty

Empathically emptiness.

I feel for everyone

But it drains me

So when I need to feel

It's all shallow and empty

I feel truly left out in the cold

I feel like a empty hallow broken shell

One more bad thing

and I will shatter again

Just finally got some pieces taped together

And yet even with the peppy music

I still feel blah

Meh

and what is the point of any of this?

When can I drop everyone and everything here

And just simply move on?

I am stuck in emotional quick sand

And I cannot move

I wish I could just figure my purpose

And just leave this place

Or even this realm.
Does it ever get better?

Funeral for pieces of me

I feel like I am having a funeral for half of myself

I feel like I do not fit in with some people anymore

But I am tied to them by marriage and DNA

I am officially the outcast black sheep.

I cannot give them what they want

But it does not matter what they wanted

They will never understand me

I did things for my own health

And yet I feel selfish and completely wrong

Was I supposed to show up in complete agony and pain?

Was I supposed to show up even though I will never be who they wanted me to be?

I just want to drop everything and simply leave

I want to go somewhere and never show my face

I look at pieces of me in a wooden box

Pieces of me that I need to simply leave behind

Good bye me. . .

I need to go live my life

Once this grey cloud of sadness leaves. . .

I've written NUMEROUS poems about depression for 16 years. I've published some but get a bit shy still to post any. But Anne Sexton is my go to poet to understand myself. Sylvia Plath too but every mental health care provider tells me not to read her...but I do. Sometimes it is healthier to write from retrospect than to write a story about depression while depressed. It establishes it into your brain more.

Me again with some other lyrics/poem:

Hurt by Jonny cash

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I'm still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
