Scared to reach out
Hi everyone,
I have been thinking about maybe trying out therapy. It hasn’t really worked for me in the past but I don’t know what else to do at this point. I think I might need some kind of medication but don’t know how to get that in motion? I’m severely depressed and suicidal, but don’t want to scare my boyfriend so I don’t really talk about it. If I were to find a therapist, would I be able to be honest about my urges without being sent to a mental hospital? (sorry if that’s an offensive way to put it I don’t know the real name for it) I don’t want to reach out if it gets me committed somewhere, but I want to talk about my problems in depth with someone.
Thank you to anyone who responds,
Hope you guys are doing okay out there.
@spikymangoes If you're severely depressed and suicidal, then at 7 Cups we are not allowed to help you. 7 Cups' advice is to call your local emergency services or find another source of help from our Crisis Resources page. Someone might even delete this entire thread before you have a chance to read it.
Many people find that therapy doesn't work, and then when they try a different therapist, it works! Finding the right therapist is a process of trial and error, sadly. So I agree with you that therapy might be worth trying again. I also agree that talking about your problems in depth does seem like a good plan.
Getting medication simply involves seeing a doctor. Doctors prescribe antidepressant medication all the time.
In contrast, mental hospital is an expensive last resort, and mental health professionals avoid sending anyone to hospital if they possibly can. So it's highly unlikely you'll be committed. (The name for it is different in different countries.)

It is frustrating that people only after having a bad therapist to realize finding one is very difficult and expensive...... if possible a general doctor could get you a basic medication until you can sort out a good fit.
I have talked to my doctor at my local clinic about my depression and anxiety. I was prescribed Lexapro and it has really helped. I just have a yearly evaluation with my doctor and that's it!
You know your depressed you reach out to find a therapist and all you get is tat we have no one available or will call you back and that need happens I no I live in the middle of nowhere it really I have good insurance and a psychiatrist but really no other help and I do not want to go to any facility even though I probably should what do you do
I know that the process feels really scary. But it is great that you are reaching out for help. I would start with your doctor. What you are experiencing has physical roots and you deserve some help. @spikymangoes
