Antidepressants

Ok guys, I need some reviews and experiences with antidepressants. I have a quite complicated situation, but I've really been thinking about getting antidepressants. Idk when that would be and if it could even happen, but I'm very nervous about my health and all that so I need details on what that medication is like. Could be any kind, I just need some reviews before I make the decision to pursue them. How often you take them, how many, side effects, feelings when you're on them, all that.

The site policy is not to allow discussions about specific medications. Everyone's experience is different so you can't necessarily extrapolate to your own situation.

The choice of antidepressant will depend on your age, what condition exactly is being treated, any comorbid physical health problems. It is a decision to make with your treating doctor who will be able to provide you with up to date information on side effects profile.

As a rule of thumb, antidepressants are taken once per day. In the morning or at night depending if they have activating or sedating properties. The side effects very widely.

You can find some further information here from the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

There are a number of different antidepressants. The newest ones are called SSRI s. There are about 5 or so of this type, as well as older ones that can be effective too. The issue is that each person responds differently each med. Someone may do really well with say [Medication name removed by Forum Mentor Dillion] while another may not see much positive result. Hey there! @ChristmasTreesInTheMoonlight

Antidepressents are something that vary from person to person. the way you react to a med may be different from the way I react to them! Meds can be very helpful but taking the wrong kind of dosage etc. can be harmful as well! The best thing to do would be to talk to your doctor about it and find out what would be best for your situation! <3 *hugs*

@Sarra thank you. I've just heard mixed reviews on antidepressants, which I guess makes sense considering all the types of medication and reactions. I haven't yet made an absolute decision to ask my doctor about them, but I'm getting desperate. My therapist has sort of under diagnosed my feeling of depression, which I was ok with at first but suicidal thoughts have been creeping in my brain more and more often lately, so I really need to act fast, so to speak

Oh no! I am sorry to hear that they under diagnosed it! It must be hard to feel like it is tougher then they think! But you are so strong and you can get through this! Whatever you decide, is the best option for you and you know yourself the best! The path may not be super clear right this moment but things will get better! We believe in you here! <3 You can do this! @ChristmasTreesInTheMoonlight

@Sarra :) thanks! She diagnosed me adjustment disorder triggered by school. I guess she missed the part where I said I had severe depression even in the summer, it just gets mixed with high levels of anxiety during the school year. We've only had like 6 sessions though, so hopefully I can direct the conversation towards that.

@ChristmasTreesInTheMoonlight First of all I would suggest you to meet a therapist and make use of therapy to heal your depression. See how that works out. If you have already been to therapy and want to go to a psych. then its your wish.

As far as the meds are concerned, it differs from person to person. In my case , they have helped me immensely recover from depression. I would also advise you one thing : Meds only help in supporting you during your worst days. At the end of the day, it all depends on you. Hence try not to depend too much on meds. Hope this helps...

@Mrcheeku Thank you. I'm currently in therapy, but not feeling very hopeful as I'm afraid my depressive symptoms have been under diagnosed. I did tell my therapist how I've started feeling suicidal lately, and she seems reasonably concerned (finally) and told me to keep track of my sleep ect. I'm just so done with everything at this point honestly
