Depression in College

I'm in college.

I currently have depression.

It is ruining my life. I am becoming utterly consumed by it and it is ruining my relationships with the people I love and it is beginning to ruin my education and possible future career. I am tired of fighting. I just want to sleep for a very long time. I have entertained the thought of killing myself but there's no point in suicide because it won't solve anything.

I am so tired of this. I just want to be happy again. And I don't know how. How do I make all these bad feelings go away?

Hey Fair

I know how you feel. I went through the same thing in college and it was one of the hardest things. Honestly I got through it by a:taking anti depressants. Obvious I know but they help sort out the chemicals in your brain that are making you think negatively. B: go talk to your gp so they know but more importantly again talk to a counsellor as often as you can. While the idea of talking to a stranger is odd, the fact that they don't know you means you never subconsciously think they are judging you. They're just there to listen C: exercise. I personally didn't think this would help but I joined a pool (I can barely swim so it was a quiet one where I got to do what I wanted in my own time) and honestly you feel better.

I'm not saying you'll be perfect with these three things and there will be days that are hard to deal with but those three things got me through and have helped me reintegrate into my friends lives.

Otherwise keep posting on 7 cups. Having an outlet is crucial. Just keep going. And the entire 7 cups community is here if you need us.

@fairmindedEnt Thank you for bringing this here. It is so hard to suffer from such negative thoughts and emotions, so if it gets too bad please don't hesitate to contact the suicide hotline.  You do not have to go through this on your own. I am also here, as a non-judgmental listener if you need to talk. Please know your life matters and help is always here if you need it.

@fairmindedEnt Hello, first and foremost I am so sorry that you are feeling this way. It sounds like there is a lot going on and I don't blame you at all for feeling the way that you do. As a fellow college student myself, have you explored resources such as any counseling your school may offer, health and wellness centers, or even taking a break from school to focus on mental health as needed? As for the education part, I'm wondering if your school has any medical withdraw options that you could pursue for courses to not impact your GPA, if needed. All in all, I completely understand how hard college is and having depression on top of that makes it even more difficult. I also want to reassure you that you are doing the best you can, despite the situation. Additionally, please reach out to me if you want! I also struggled with depression in college and can share what I did to navigate my situation, although note that depression is different and unique for everyone! Sending warm hugs!

@fairmindedEnt Rest. Food. Sun. Movement. Hygiene.

These are the 5 main things the human body needs in order to feel good.

Feel ***? Ask yourself what you need right now.

You come before all of your schoolwork. Your only real task is to take care of your body. That's it. Your mind will reward you.

❤️

Also, think about sending some emails telling your professors and your counselors what's going on. They will bend the rules for you. They will help you.

@fairmindedEnt Thank you for expressing your thoughts and seeking help. I see a lot of helpful responses here and I hope some of them have bought you the the help u need. I can only add my two cents-exercise and interest. Try and find atleast one outdoor activity u can pursue every day or consistently. And try to keep up with doing it. Slowly but surely, the steps will add up and change ur mood and state. All the best!

Hello Fair,

I understand what you must be feeling. Depression can be a lot for anyone to handle and can feel very consuming. It can seem like nothing matters anymore, but don't think that. You matter. Please, if you keep having those thoughts to reach out to a suicide hotline or talk to someone you trust about this. Don't think just because you are struggling that you can't be success or do anything in life, because you can.

I'm really really glad you reached out. And I want you to knowis you don’t have to carry all of this alone. you’re dealing with something unbelievably heavy. depression isn’t just sadness it’s like a fog that seeps into every part of life. It distorts how you see yourself, your relationships, your future. It makes everything feel impossible, even getting through the next hour. But just because it feels like it’s ruining your life doesn’t mean it will. This isn’t the end of your story.

There are crisis services and professionals who are trained specifically for moments like this. And reaching out to them is not dramatic or too much It’s the next brave step after reaching out here.

you can check Check the International Association for Suicide Prevention directory via 7 Cups' Crisis Resources page.

Hey Fair,

Your feelings are valid in feeling this way. With depression, even the smallest things can be hard to do. I understand how you feel-I went through a long period where I slept the days away, and didn't see a point in living anymore because I felt so tired and so worthless. One day, though, I made a decision to do something small, something miniscule. I decided that I would climb out of the large well I was stuck in at the bottom, brick by tiny brick. I started reading a self help book, even if I put it down after the first page and didn't return to it until the next week. I started a gratitude journal, even if it was inconsistent and felt fake at first. Slowly, painstakingly slowly, these small moments will add up, and you will be able to enjoy college and life again. I clawed my way back up from a suicide attempt, and now am about to publish my first book, be in my second year of college wrestling, and have found best friends for life. I've gotten to start to want things instead of just wishing things would end. I've started enjoying small walks, the movement of my body, making breakfast in the morning, having an everything shower, putting on a candle, etc. I remembered just how much I wanted to live, and I know you will be able to remember that feeling again, too. Don't give up hope. Change is around the corner as long as you keep doing something, anything, to find it.
