I am stuck
Hello, my name is Gabe and Im a freshman in college. I've recently became concerned with my mental health condition after some needed self reflection. Over the last couple of years I have lost interest in almost all of the hobbies I used to enjoy. I used to spend my free time doing lots of things but now i find myself sitting inside and having no desire to go outside and meet new people or really anything. I am also struggling with my classes, but not because they're challenging or difficult. When my assignment grade isnt a 0% for being unfinished I get A's with little to no struggle. I cant seem to find any motivation or willpower to push through and live my life how I used to, and im affraid if I cant get on the right track soon im going to waste my life away. Does anyone relate to my experience and have any advice for me?
@GabeGrat Why did you decide to go to college? Were you forced by your parents? Have you considered that maybe college isn't for you and maybe you should try and into the skilled trades or maybe even see what the military has? You're clearly really smart guy but that doesn't mean you have to go to college, there is many jobs out there for smart people that don't require degrees.
I appreciate the advice and thank you. To be honest ive only saw it one way: going to college, being an engineer, and working as an engineer for the forseeable future. Ive never considered any other options but you are right, college isnt for everyone. At the same time I feel like i should explore my potential during college before considering another option like a trade school or the military. I have looked into serving in the military though, a lot of my friends and family are in the military and they say the structure and discipline you have in and out of the military is really useful. Thank you for the new perspective, i will keep that in mind.
@GabeGrat i was also in the military and it was good. i just don't wanna see you get in so much debt for something you don't wanna do. even check out the national guard, they play army one weekend a month and help pay for college
Maybe it's time to try something completely different! It can be really intimidating at first, but sometimes a refresh on life can be helpful in jumpstarting your life again.
Have you thought about joining any clubs/sports on campus? It's a great way to meet new people and learn new things. If you join an academic club like robotics or any honor societies, you can find study groups to keep you motivated. If you join a new sport, you can find new friends and maybe boost your mood with the added exercise.
@GabeGrat
Hello Gabe! My name is Alaya. I'm so sorry to know that you're going through this. I cannot even imagine how difficult it must be for you to be in this situation. It's nice to know that you even while you're dealing with these negative emotions you are able to recognise that you are a smart person who can easily do well in academics when he tries. Not being able to use that potential because of your mental health can definitely feel bad.
It's really not my place to give any advice as it is easy to give, but it can sometimes be wrong or even harmful. I don't have a full understanding of your life or world. You know your situation the best. What I can do is recommend you to seek a listener here so that you can discuss your feelings one on one. You can reach out to me if you'd like. I'll try my best to be here and listen to you. I'd also like to suggest you to go through the "Getting Unstuck" guide that is available on 7Cups. It helped me while I was struggling with finding motivation to work and getting my tasks done. It might help you too. Here is the link https://www.7cups.com/getting-unstuck/
I hope it goes well for you! Please feel free to reach out if you'd like. Take care! :)
