When things get bad, what do you hold on to?

@Chiaroscuro1

I hold on to things I love (like books, tv shows, games, etc) and also to the memory of my grandparents. They aren't here anymore but I know I need to stay alive and be happy and successful for them

This is very sweet, holding onto and enjoying the memory of someone can be a great thing once we have come to terms with their loss! I had some great ones too!

I used to try to hold on to God. But that doesn't work very well for me now and I'm wondering if it ever really helped. So I tried to answer this question for myself.

x Just as good times don't last forever, neither do bad times.

x Self care is important.

x I try to pay attention to what is important to me.

x Somehow you will be taken care of.

x Somehow you will be provided for.

x Somehow you will get what you need.

x My family loves me and cares about me.

x My friends care.

x It's okay to keep things simple.

x My therapist cares and want

Still thinking about it...

@Chiaroscuro1

I hold on to myself and my boyfriend. I also use to things I'm very passionate about because an occupied brain is a happy one, means I won't be thinking in bad stuff.

@Chiaroscuro1 I cling to the only thing I have left- my own rationale. I explain to myself, from the perspective of someone who's default emotion is that of sadness, that all things, even time itself, is temporary, that pain and misery are not eternal. Even hell will cease to exist someday. It's probably more nihilistic than comforting but, having a dark sense of humor as I do, it makes me smile to think that if it feels as though the weight of the world is crushing me, in a few billion years the world will be disintegrated into oblivion when the sun stops fusing hydrogen. Take that world!

'People often have a knack for choosing the things that are worst for them'
In my case, I try to hold on to people who might not be worthy of trust or any sort of emotional attatchment

@ShadlokVance - I'm sorry to hear that. But I understand how it can happen. Maybe you can find someone more "healthy" to connect with on 7 Cups?

There are two things I try to hold on to..

1) The statistical reality that I've survived so much that I'm still here and still functioning, so I can survive this as well. It makes me feel strong and capable to know that I haven't lost yet and it isn't likely that I'll be losing anytime soon.

2) My love of nature. Knowing that the trees continue to live and grow no matter how many storms they endure gives me a lot of strength. Plus knowing that I get to be a part of such a beautiful world really helps me fight back against some of my most negative thoughts.

@will0thewisp - I really like what you said about the trees. I read about tree-hugging somewhere. Not the green movement kind, but the physical putting your arms around a tree and just standing like that for a while. Taking in the tree and its being. I tried it and liked it.

I hold onto the fact that many people appreciate me for who I am? And that I dont need to impress those who are already around me
