We want to get to know you!
Hello guys I am Swetha. I just want to reach out ot everyone and tell them that you are not alone in this journey! We are fighting together and there is no better resource than a support system. Please feel free to reach out anyone at anytime for guidance<3
What are some of the main signs of depression, and depression related disorders that should not be ignored?
@sunnyForest31 - Valid and aweosme question! I'm surprised no one has answered this yet, so please allow me to and forgive my super long, thorough post.
Anything that impacts our day-to-day wellbeing is worth taking seriously. The impact of whatever we are suffering from or dealing with is real, and that is worth caring for and paying attention to.
Depression is hard to self-diagnose and self-care for because we are in the thick of that depression; similarly it can be hard for those we know who may be suffering from it to recognize their symptoms or accept their depression. The very nature of depression can make it harder to self-analyze fairly and with compassion. Possibly one of the best things we can do for other people is to consistently let them know we are there for them in a nonjudgmental fashion. Possibly one of the best things we can do for ourselves, is simply be aware of the impact our depression has on our thoughts, perceptions and life, and try to learn how to love ourselves again. It is a very long, tedious recovery process, with depression trying to undermine our own efforts, but it is possible to prevail and seek our own happiness.
Symptoms will vary from person to person. We are all different, and that is okay! There are increasngly more resources online to help determine the symptoms of depression. In fact, 7cups has a Depression Help Guide with a lot of useful research information. Here's what it has to say about symptoms, for instance:
From the 7cups Self-Care Depression Guide:
Cognitive Symptoms
- Self-criticism
- Hopelessness
- Suicidal thoughts
- Concentration difficulties
- Overall negativity
Behavioral Changes
- Withdrawal from other people
- Not doing as many activities that are enjoyable or pleasurable
- Having difficultly getting started with activities
Physical Symptoms
- Insomnia
- Sleeping more or less than usual
- Being tired
- Eating less or more
- Weight changes
Emotional Symptoms
- Sadness
- Irritability
- Anger
- Guilt
- Nervousness
If you or someone you know consistenly suffers from some of these conditions, it's possible they might be suffering from depression, but again, it is hard to self-analyze and difficult to really know what another person is going through. Good luck with your research and please don't be afraid to let us know what you have learned here in the forums as well!
Hey everyone
My name is Gregory and I have had a depression for about 4 years now. I lost a lot of friends lately, my grandmother died not so long ago and other things.. 7 years ago they told me I had a mental illness aswell.. I have stuggled extremely because of that. I also used to drink, started drinking on my own and smoking, but that didn't do me a lot of good so I quit smoking. I'm 21 btw.
@discreetVase8193
I'm glad you've quit smoking. I know some people smoke because of stress, but I've also seen people with depression who smokes, and they feel horrible everyday. I don't like calling it Mental Illness, it makes it sound so foreign. It is hard to accept it at first, but once you find coping skills that work for you, better days will come. Depression is on/off state that is continuous for all of us. I've had for about 2/3 of my life, and I'm only 30. I found 7 Cups recently, and it's nice to have people out there to understands what we're going through. As I have no support from family or friends. This is my breathing hole.
Hope you have a great experience here. Welcome!~
Hello my name is lawrencia and am new here... I decided to join this community because I need someone to talk to. I am someone who doesn't make friends and mostly keep to myself.. My boyfriend was the only person I could relate well to.. We've been dating for about 2 years and he is always cheating or flirting.. He apologize never to do it again but within some weeks he will go back to it.. I know he sincerely loves me and I love him too but he just can't change. About two days ago I decided to leave him for good because the relationship was emotionally abusive but since the breakup I haven't been ohk.. I still think I need him and it hurts so much
Hello, I'm Anaïs (screen name) and I joined 7cups almost a year ago but I used it only briefly.
I started showing depression symptoms around 2013, after 3 years of therapy and 2 an half years of medical treatment things have changed and I can consider myself recovering. Unfortunately, bad and good times come in waves and I may still have a long way before me, I have set (mostly unknowingly) some bad habits and unhealthy coping skills, so my moods are now hectic
Glad to know you all.
hi everyone. my name is allonia and ive been suffering from depression for about two years now. i joined 7cups a while ago and would only log on when i was really low. thats actually what brought me here this time around but i now plan on sticking with this. ive never told anyone about my depression and have only talked about instances with people in a manner that would not get them concerned about me. anyway, i just wanted to push through the walls ive built up and introduce myself.
@cptAm

hi, my names izzy. i guess if im going to share my story i should start from the beggining. when i was 13 i was sexualy assaulted. and from there things just seemed to get worse. I was angry at everyone for what had happened, but i was mostly angry with myself. Im still angry with myself. I eventually learned to deal with it as best i could. I never told anyone. I went to school and people had started rumors. I became the class slut. which i really wasnt because i realize now that what happened wasnt my fault. I went to school with the boy who assaulted me for 3 years and let everyone believe the lies he told because i thought i deserved it. I came out as bisexual at 14. i met a girl who i thought cared about me, which she didnt. she lied about being gay. and didnt tell me the truth, she told everyone but me in fact. so once again i found myself labeled. Eventually, i learned to live with that too. I learned to cope usuing drugs and alchohol, which evendently got me into this mess of a life in the first place. My parents were both drug addicts and alhoholics. my dad left before i was born and my mom took me and remarried. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety at 15. then ADD. i still use drugs as a way to cope with my feelings. My life just feels like one mistake after another. im in counceling and groups and on meds. i met a boy who i fell in love with, he moved, then came back... and then left again. Ive been homeschooled for a year and im going on my second year. I work and that keeps me busy but i cant be alone with myself without reflecting on every bad decision i ever made. i feel so stuck. always in the same place. never moving forward. I want to be better but i just cant see myself ever being happy. I hope by writing my story i learn to live with where im at and move one with my life. thanks for listening.
I'm not sure you would consider me new I've beenon this site and the depression forums a lot but i wanted to join the community so...hello everyone
