Does your disability affect your ability to properly hydrate in any way? No, my disability doesn't affect my ability to properly hydrate in any way.
Do you have any tips for someone dealing with similar difficulties? Don't let people tell you what you cant do you might have to do it differently so what.
How are you doing this week? im so so
@blissfulTouch29 Thanks for coming by the check in and I like that, yes sometimes we do things differently and it's alright!
@AffyAvo thanks
Does your disability affect your ability to properly hydrate in any way?
No, it doesn't. I do struggle with being hydrated because I'm forgetful however.
@Plantsaremybestfriends
Thank you I also make sure I have a water bottle near my bedside too. I am here for you
My disability doesn't do that, fortunately. However I've been careful to drink enough water most days ever since I lived in southern NV for a few years. It's a desert environment; during summer the heat there is as brutal as in most places in the world. My hot weather tips, from my experience as a "desert rat":
- If when you pee it comes out yellow, you are in the first phase of dehydration. Get some water immediately.
- If you have a headache (& normally do not have head pain) then you're probably dehydrated. Drink some H2O pronto.
- When it's hot, don't go outside without covering your head. A hat, a bandana, anything will do as long as it's white or light-colored. If it covers the back of your neck too, that's even better. This goes double if you're bald. It also applies when in winter or cold autumn: some 30% of your body heat is emitted from your neck & head.
- Wear a long-sleeved button-down shirt or denim jacket open, over your t-shirt. This keeps the sun off your shoulders & arms. Also, a long-sleeved shirt slows the evaporation of your sweat & will catch a breeze if there's air movement. Think of Bedouin Arabs: do you see them running around in t-shirts (or shirtless), shorts & flip-flops? No, you do not. They dress as they do for good reason.
- When you're driving, park your car in a shady spot every chance you get. A car sitting in direct sunlight can produce temperatures of 🔼 43 deg. Celsius / 110 deg. Fairenheit inside itself.
- Keep at least one gallon of potable water in your vehicle. When in doubt, keep two. Your car may break down somewhere inconvenient. If it does, what if your phone is dead or there's no coverage where you are? You may have to wait for help. Plastic jugs are thin & easily damaged; glass jugs are fairly sturdy unless they're dropped on a hard surface from four feet or so. But glass ones can be washed & reused. You pays your money & you takes your choice. Keep 'em on the floor behind the driver or passenger seats...you don't want them falling off the seat whenever you brake.
- Carry firestarting materials in your car, also. Why do this in a hot area? Read on: If you're driving & your car breaks down in an arid environment, try calling for help. If your phone isn't working or there's no coverage where you are, do not panic. (Panicking is the worst option to pick, always) In the US & probably in most other Western countries, fire is your friend. Gather combustible materials from nearby (do not wander too far from your vehicle!), gather them in a small pile at least 20 feet from your car & light it up. If it's daytime, the smoke will attract a fire marshal or other local authority; if it's night the fire itself will do the same. This move may or may not be legal but in a life-or-death situation, you can't worry about that. Once you explain what's going on, the fire marshal will probably understand & help you out.
- Avoid alcohol during daylight hours. Alcohol takes water from your body more quickly.
- Ditto for caffeine, if you can help it. Caffeine does the same thing in the same way...that's why people who drink lots of coffee tend to go to the bathroom a lot.
- If possible, avoid outside activities during the middle of the day...usually from 10 a.m. to around 3:30 p.m. During those hours the sun is highest in the sky & sunlight is at maximum potency.
- Don't mess with rattlesnakes, scorpions or other local wildlife. (Do I even need to say that?)
