Dear disability community!

Summer is coming to the north hemisphere of the Earth. It is time when many people from all around the world travel and go to vacation. At least did they so in times before coronavirus pandemics outbreak. Travelling can be a struggle for people with disabilities even in times when there was no coronavirus pandemics as they need accomodations which aren't always present and cause that some awesome tourist places are inaccessible to them. Coronavirus pandemics will have severe consequences on tourism this year. Many people will decide to stay home due to coronavirus pandemics which is still present in many places of the world. It will be even harder for disabled people. For example, lifts are very risky places to catch coronavirus and so, everyone is advised to use stairs instead of lifts. It can be huge obstacle for people who need wheelchairs. Everyone has to wear masks in closed public places such as hotels which can affect people with hearing loss who rely on lip reading.

Checkin questions:

1) If there wasn't coronavirus threat, would you like to travel?

2) How much does your disability affect your ability to go places?

@WeedyGarden Have you ever used one of the sand wheelchairs or whatever they are called? I wonder how well they work. It would be nice if more beaches had things like that available.

@AffyAvo no, I haven't tried one, it would be fun. I like to stand in the ocean and get knocked over by the waves, it's a humbling experience. Czn't stand in the ocean anymore.

@purpleTree4652 It's hard when what you feel comfortable with vs. what you want to do don't align. Perhaps over time they won't conflict as much.

JoyousBear OP June 4th, 2020

@purpleTree4652 it must be very hard for you to cope travelling with your mental disability (PTSD) and regarding that you are poor. I hope that you will eventuelly be able to go to your dream places again and that you will be able to enjoy them.

1) If there wasn't coronavirus threat, would you like to travel?

Yes, there are many places I would like to see.

2) How much does your disability affect your ability to go places?

A fair bit. I can go places, but it makes it more difficult. The travel itself can be a trigger (pressure changes, vibrations, etc). Then there's the issue of if destinations will have what I need. Medical travel insurance can also be complicated to get enough coverage for pre-existing conditions.

3) Which was your dream destination before coronavirus pandemics?

Australia and New Zealand both sound interesting to me, although it's not like I had plans lined up or anything.

4) How will coronavirus disease pandemics affect your travel plans for this year?

Not much. I typically would go to my hometown at least once though and I don't know if that will happen. It's not restricted, but I would normally stay at my parents' house and being a house guest/having house guests is something I am not comfortable with at this time. That city also has had more cases, so just going to a store or something like that to pick up something is a bit riskier there, although that is changing over time.

@Jennifer77 Sorry to hear you're in pain and are depressed. Do you have anything available to you that helps? Medications you can take, a bath or some heat, gentle stretches, calling a friend, relaxation techniques?

I hope things improve.

1) If there wasn't coronavirus threat, would you like to travel?
Yes. I love traveling anywhere I can.
2) How much does your disability affect your ability to go places?
Not a whole lot. I just recently got a new power wheelchair, so I imagine my possibilities are that much greater.
3) Which was your dream destination before coronavirus pandemics?
So before the outbreak, I was actually planning and REALLY, REALLY looking forward to going to Galaxy's Edge in Disney World – being the Star Wars nerd that I am – but unfortunately that didn't work out.
4) How will coronavirus disease pandemics affect your travel plans for this year?
Very much so. It will even stop me from doing the little things since I have a list of medical issues, including diabetes. I'm pretty vulnerable to the disease, so I'm just trying to stay home as much as possible.
