Hey disability community!

1st May was international workers' day. Legislation is in place which protects rights of disabled persons to work and to protect them in hiring, work and protect them from discrimination.

Check in questions:

1) Do you work? If you don't work yet, will you work in the future? If you don't work anymore, did you work as disabled persons?

2) Which obstacles do (did) you encounter at work due to your disability?

3) Do you think that legislation for protecting disabled workers actually protects them?

4) What do you think should be changed in order that you will have easier time finding suitable job and working?

I wish that you like your job, that it is challenging enough for you and that you have got good relationships at work and no discrimination, stigma and other negative things which disabled workers face all too often.

@gentleSun78 THANKS FOR THIS POST 🙂

1) Do you work? If you don't work yet, will you work in the future? If you don't work anymore, did you work as disabled persons?

Ans: No I'm currently studying! Yes I will definitely work in the future as I want to be a doctor!

2) Which obstacles do (did) you encounter at work due to your disability?

Ans: AS FAR IN MY COLLEGE , INFRASTRUCTURE OF MANY BUILDINGS ARE NOT AT ALL FEASIBLE FOR DIFFERTNLY ABLED PEOPLE .

3) Do you think that legislation for protecting disabled workers actually protects them?

ANS: i do think that legislation for protecting disabled workers actually protect us but to be honest it needs to be improved in many terms as it sometimes disheartening if someone's rights are being violated .

4) What do you think should be changed in order that you will have easier time finding suitable job and working?

Ans: first of all the main concern I'm afraid of is my infrastructure which are not at all easier for us to move around . There should be Equal rights given to everyone noone should discriminated due to their abilities ! And lastly I want to conclude by society shouldn't treat as different by showing sympathy as far as I'm very emotional in this topic ! Every people should be treated normally there is no need to change your attitude towarde anyone ! I know differently abled people need special care and support but we are not here to take someone sympathy !

@comfortableEyes5 I am glad for your wish to become doctor and i wish that you will be successfull in your profession. Yes, infrastructure of buildings can be huge obstacle for disabled people. People who are abled often don't see that they created new obstacles for people who are disabled when constructing a building. I hope that it can be somehow alleviated. Yes, sympathy can hurt. Many people think that they are empathetic, but in fact they show sympathy instead of empathy.

@WeedyGarden It is hard to endure unreasonable job performance demands. Many times people who are abled have hard time adjusting workplace to person who is disabled and many times also money plays role there as company needs also to earn profits. But i understand that it must be very hard for people who are disabled when face unreasonable job performance demands.

@gentleSun78 Sometimes people just are not willing to give disabled people,a chance. Not all ways. But sometimes.

I am retired on disability,now.

I love 7cups,because they give everyone chances, including disabled people.

@Happy900 Yes, there are people who aren't willing to give disabled people chance and it is very unfortunate.

I am glad that you like 7cups as it gives everyone chance regardless of disability. I like 7cups too out of the same reason.

1) Do you work? If you don't work yet, will you work in the future? If you don't work anymore, did you work as disabled persons?

I haven't worked in a decade. I did work as a disabled person when I had fewer disability/health issues. I might work in the future as a self-employed person where I can set my own accommodations.

2) Which obstacles do (did) you encounter at work due to your disability?

Ignorant, judgemental coworkers who don't understand fatigue & brain fog or migraines. Fear of mentioning disabilities during the hiring process because I was being pushed by some government agency or non- profit organization that was 'helping' me to just get another job.

3) Do you think that legislation for protecting disabled workers actually protects them?

Not enough. A lot of homeless people have disabilities.

4) What do you think should be changed in order that you will have easier time finding suitable job and working?

Before the industrial era, people found their niche. Since, it has become more about founding your employer. I think the whole issue needs more creative solutions being generated.

@redGrapes1822 Ignorant, judgemental, pushy co workers and other people involved can be huge burden for person who is disabled. I agree that disability legislation needs to be improved to give more protection to disabled workers.

1) Do you work? If you don't work yet, will you work in the future? If you don't work anymore, did you work as disabled persons?

I do work.

2) Which obstacles do (did) you encounter at work due to your disability?

Honestly not many, I hide my disabilities. My coworkers are type A and aggressive.

3) Do you think that legislation for protecting disabled workers actually protects them?

Not as long as I see wording like "mental defect" or "mental disabilities" used in company communications .

4) What do you think should be changed in order that you will have easier time finding suitable job and working?

No more labels! I dont want to be special or different. I don't understand it. We create labels so everyone can be special. I think it separates us. It separates me.

@RealityCzech It is very sad that disability protection legislation doesn't protect us from stigma and labelling. Encountering stigma and labelling at workplace can be very hurtful and burdensome for people with disabilities and it can also harm their health and well being. I hope that things get improved in future.

1) Do you work? If you don't work yet, will you work in the future? If you don't work anymore, did you work as disabled persons?

I do, I have a very flexible job which I actually came up with to work around my limitations.

2) Which obstacles do (did) you encounter at work due to your disability?

I can't really go out often without negative effects. Even from home, I can only do so much due to fatigue.

3) Do you think that legislation for protecting disabled workers actually protects them?

I think it works well for certain situations. Things like mobility accessibility are often a big focus. Invisible stuff doesn't have the same level of understanding nor protection.

4) What do you think should be changed in order that you will have easier time finding suitable job and working?

More flexibility and understanding in society in general. Things are designed around those who are healthy and able bodied most of the time.

@AffyAvo I am glad that you have got very flexible job which you can perform despite your disability. I agree that more flexibility is needed and that also invisible disabilities need to be taken more into account when creating or adjusting disability legislation. I hope that it improves in future.
