This years International Day of People with Disabilities theme is:

"NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE"

Some disabilities are obvious while others are not. Today the world focuses on the invisible disasbilities.

Some of these disabilities include; mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions, among others.

Do you or someone you know have invisible disabilities? Please tell us of your experiences. Do you feel supported or how would you like to be supported? Is there anything you would like to share with others who have invisible disabilities?

You can read about the International Day of People with Disabilities here.

@WeedyGarden My experiance with having an invisible disabilty is being told "There is no such thing" and "It's all in your head". People have argued with me about it also. I am fortunate to have 1 person who is supportive of me.

@CoffeeCompassion time slips away and we can all go through our could haves, would haves and should haves. These turn into regrets and fester. Today is a new day and we move on. Can you try to be more supportive from today onward?

@WeedyGarden

But also, how can I be supportive when i have moved basically to a different continent? Calling and texting...sometimes exasperates people.

@CoffeeCompassion we are only responsible for our efforts, not for the outcomes. We attempt to make connections and build bridges but we have no control over how they are received.

Maybe you could try skype or zoom? Next best thing to being there.

I have multiple illnesses spme invisible some visible. I feel like the visible ones get validated more diagnosed more severity of symptoms empathized with better and are diagnosed faster. For invisible illnesses I wish the extent of my symptoms were acknowledged better especially in the medical system. I don't mind if those supporting me nonmedically don't understand the illnesses much as long as they suggesting the issue isn't something else. Ie hae swell many people will get asked what did you eat that you're allergic to despite it being mentioned it's not an allergy. I do wish medical professionals would put in more effort to learning more though. I don't expect nonspecialists to be experts but it is frustrating to have to explain triggers non useful meds etc. multiple times.

For those supporting I wish there was less of a have you tried ... you should ... etc. Unless these people have really looked into the issues and they have heard of something likely to help the has new evidence or something this type of thing gets fairly exasperating as it comes from many people. There's also been some fairly dangerous things some have really pushed which when I state so and it's still pushed sounds like my wellbeing is valued less than their advice.
