Need vs Pride: how do they match ?

Hello !

Today i would converse with you about NEED and PRIDE.

As for definition a need is about something essential or very important rather than just desirable.

Pride is about a becoming or dignified sense of what is due to oneself .

1 * What would you say about these words? What is a need and what is pride for you?

2 * If we would imagine a scenario in which we have a need, can we say that our pride could come along to stop us showing our need? Did it ever happen to you?

3 * Have you ever chosen to hold back your needs, for sense of pride, and regret it later?

4 * In what situations could happen that one overcomes the other?

5 * Need and pride...can they really match?

Feel free to reply to any of the above questions, or just to share your opinion !

I look forward to read your posts ! laugh

1) Need is a necessity, something crucial to life Pride is the consciousness of one's own dignity
I'm not familiar with your definition of pride. Your definition more closely fits entitlement or privilege. That's a whole different discussion from pride being dignity.

Hence, the oft used statement: Pride goeth before the fall. (Technically the original quote is: Pride goeth before destruction; and a haughty spirit before the fall.)

2) In my opinion and experience, Pride often stands in the way of people's needs and getting them met by means other their own self-sufficency. Many of times pride is tied to preventing people for asking for help in fear of looking needy (or in some cases hypocritical); fear of proving others true (by proving label like loser to be true by asking for help); feelings of failure because they have ended up in the situation that the believe the should have been able to control, refusing to ask for help because you don't want to be "one of those lazy people looking for a handout", feelings of depression because their situation has changed and don't want to admit it, fear of being judged, fear of refused (seen that more than once) -- not necessarily pride on the nose but perhaps under its umbrella.

4.) When times grow desperate enough, dark enough, miserable enough -- some people will "swallow their pride" and ask for help but not all (I've seen that). That's why many services that provide necessities within communities (food banks, clothes closets, shelters, free clinics, and so on) have a level anonymity to them and sometimes are removed from high traffic areas to serve a population that doesn't want to be seen seeking the service. It's also a point of misery in someone's life when family and friends might think to (or need to) step in and make sure the person is taken care of even they are unwilling to ask for help - for the sake of pride or other reasons.

@diplomaticconfucious

Hello !!

Well, i've chosen this definition between those listed in the vocabulary, because it sounded the best to spur us to write something on that regard, to share our idea about it.

Thank you for your interesting reply and all the reflections you put in it ! yes

@BeyondTheInvisible

This is a very good post to draw our attention to the fact that pride can stop us from getting what we need, like e.g. i cannot lift something (i am in need of help) but i am not asking anybody because i do not want anybody to know that i cannot do it.

Hi @amiablePeace77 !!

Glad you liked it !

Of course it has been made to draw our attention on that, so we can reflect about it and think whether it is okay the way we behave or if we could work on something to be different. wink

Thanks for sharing about you !

Take care.

I think pride can be an excellent force for good. For instance, I take pride in the work I do, I feel shame when I don't live up to the standards I've set for myself.

Too much pride, not so good.

@DaveMcGrath

Hello Dave !

If you are aware that your pride sometimes is too much, maybe you can work on that to rebalance things?

@BeyondTheInvisible

Probably need to start making ammends for those who you just ran over in the process of satisfying your pride, vanity, ego, and what not. By the time you realize you are being too prideful, it is usually too late.

I say that its better to begin to cultivate humility. Be proud of being humble.
