Plastic Straw Ban
In some places, plastic straws are being banned due to environmental concerns. Their access is also becoming limited in others.
Have you used plastic straws due to your disability?
Are you affected by a straw ban?
There are straws made out of other materials - cardboard, metal, although this often don't have a flexible bend and cardboard straws can distingrate after a while. Do you find the replacements suitable?
If you are affected, how are you coping?
This is definitely an interesting point-of-view of the plastic straw ban that is slowly rolling out to many places! I haven't been effected by it as I personally don't use straws often anyway, but I'm excited to hear some people who may find plastic straws helpful for their disability
I've used metal straws for a long time now, so it hasn't really affected me
@peacefulHug92
How do you ensure they are sterile each time? What about the build up inside?
I know its hard enough to keep sippy cup spouts sterile so a straw must be very hard?
@MistyMagic
i suppose you can boil them as you would be sterilizing other metals. Or soak in sterilizing solutions and then rinse.
@MistyMagic Some reusable straws come with a little cleaning brush, they look kind of like the craft pipecleaners, but more durable.
@MistyMagic they come with a straw cleaner thing, it's like a long thin brush
if you put soap on the brush and scrubbed the inside, it's very clean
@peacefulHug92 @Affyavo yes I have seen those I suppose it all depends on what is drunk through the straw
I don't need plastic straws, but they have helped me in dealing with medical stuff.
I find that a cold drink can help greatly with vasovagal responses and those can lead to full out vasovagal syncope - ie. fainting. When I'm doing IVs on myself I do not have a free hand, as it is a 3rd hand makes it so much easier, and I also have to keep things sterile. So when I need to do this alone I usually set up a cold drink with a straw.
The bendy straws do help, small movement can lead to loss of a proper IV, so not needing to move as much to get to the straw helps.
I probably could manage with other types of straws. I still have a box up with all my supplies though, so I will finish those first although I will want to test out a different straw before I run out completely.
So for me this is only a very specific situation, I do not need a straw for my usual drinking needs.
