March 21st is a day where you can wear colourful and mismatched socks as a way to share your support and encourage awareness for Down Syndrome?
Why mismatched socks?
Karyotypes are a way to display chromosomes and typically people have 22 autosomal pairs plus 2 sex chromosomes. The autosomal pairs look like pairs of socks. The most common type of Down Syndrome is trisomy 21, meaning there are 3 of chromosome 21, not a pair. So it looks like an extra sock on the karyotype.
