Sexism within Medicine/Healthcare
For Women's Day this felt like a good topic
It's knonw the medical and healthcare fields have quite a bit of sexism. Women aren't included in studies as much as men, while it's getting better it's still no equal. Women's symptoms are less likely to be taken seriously. The effect hormone such as estrogen have on a lot of aspects aren't well known. That lack of information and discrimination also applies to those who are transgender and non-binary.
Have you experienced sexism when it came to medical care?
Do you have tips for those who do experience it?

@AffyAvo No I have not. I am a male.
Sometimes I have issues because of my disability, of getting people to understand me.
I do not l know how helpful,I am being.
But I just thought I would try my best to help.
Some people are nice and others are not, but that is life, some good and some not so good.
The tick is to not to get to upset when people are not so kind.
I am getting better at not letting it bother me,but I am still working at it,because sometimes it still does.
I think am not alone in saying that either.
So a work in progress.
I've had issues both from lack of knowledge that has sexist aspects and more individualized issues with not being believed.
My tips are to advocate for yourself - switching to a different person isn't always possible but often there are at least some people within healthcare where you do have a choice. Ie. My hematologist (who is great anyway) would be very difficult to replace, but if need needed I could go to another GP.
Make complaints when appropriate, to the appropriate place.
Learn about your own conditions.
For the really big research based issues - get involved with groups that can help. There is power in numbers.
@AffyAvo
I have experienced doctors putting serious pain and symptoms I was having as:
"Oh it's just your period"
I knew it wasn't. I insisted it wasn't. I ended up in hospital for a whole week simply because they refused to give me an ultrasound. It wasn't my period as I suspected and I was almost put into emergency surgery because of how late they left it.
Fun times :/
