My boyfriend had an accident on march 2023, he was severely injured on his knee and is still suffering til today with the recovery and all that, he's 32 I'm 26. I really care for him and want to support him better, he's having suicidal thoughts, I'm trying my best but he feels like I don't understand how he feels and i find it so difficult to emotionally support him. I support him physically but not mentally and he is going down.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated ✨️

@sociableSpruce6790 Hi there. Welcome to 7 Cups!

It's great that you want to help and support your friend, pain can be so frustrating, but please remember that 7 Cups does not support those that are in crisis. We refer them them to www.7cups.com/crisis There are far more specialised apps that are trained and help those at risk.

We can offer emotional support 1 to 1  by using our active listening skills, or offer support in a group or forum setting. But, for that you would need to ask him to join as a member and when he is not in crisis. I hope you understand.

My husband has been a huge support to me, but he can't do it all. I sought supports elsewhere, connected with groups, learned how to do certain things myself, etc. so he doesn't feel like he has to be the one to do it all. We also have conversations about the things that he doesn't feel as capable or as comfortable helping me with so I try to focus on seeking help outside with those things. I also encourage him to get support (in addition to supporting him in some ways) although I find he prefers to use distractions as a method of self-care.

I think with some medical conditions it can be tricky to know when to go to the doctor, the emergency room, etc. but it's also important to figure out. Health professionals can assist a bit with making these plans ahead of time. It sounds like you both need some outside support.
