Hi! I’m Kylee and I’m new!. When I was in elementary school I was diagnosed with scoliosis. I’m in high school and I still haven’t gotten it fix. Doctors gaslighted me about it. I just wanted to have a normal body. I looked it up and scoliosis causes anxiety, depression and being insecure about my body. How can I be happy in my own body?

Hi there Kylee!

Welcome to 7 Cups! So glad you found us. I'm Misty and I lead the Disability Support Community here.

You said that you have been diagnosed with scoliosis, that can be a tough diagnosis to get your head round and understand.

Did you google it? I do that all the time and I have gotten an expert google-er lol! But, what I have also learned is that on some sites and places anyone can say anything so it's important where our health is concerned that we only believe trusted sites. I am sure you have learnt all of this at school but it never hurts to share.

Just so everyone understands what we are posting about - Scoliosis is a condition of the spine, it can cause it to grow in a curved shape instead of being straight. Scoliosis can take many shapes and often it does not need any treatment except monitoring to see what happens and if growth impacts on activities or whether growth actually improves the curve. Many people live happily with scoliosis, but a medical professional is always the best person to talk to.

I think that the mere fact of googling a medical condition may cause anxiety, and then we may get depressed after reading about it, and then we may worry and catastrophize until we are in a right mess not knowing what to do.
 What does your family say? Have you talked this over with them? What about your school teachers or nurse?
I also think that to be fair, many teens are unhappy in their body? Constantly changing and growing, developing and maturing, it is something that I remember in great detail, and then I watched my children go through it too!

I am sure you may have many, many questions, I would be happy to chat if that helps.

@ivorySquare8083 Welcome!

Is scoliosis impacting your ability to move well? I know there's a huge range, some people struggle with walking or even internal issues whereas others just have to take a bit of extra care, especially if getting involved with a sport to avoid overusing one muscle and having a weak muscle elsewhere.

Doctors can be really frustrating, I wish they would all listen to our concerns better!
